Lack of draft picks won't deter Orlando Magic from keeping busy

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

So what do you do when the NBA gets all dressed up for its annual ball and you're invited but don't have a date? Well, the Orlando Magic will soon find out as they prepare for Thursday's draft without a selection for the first time in team history.

This will be an interesting off season. The core of the team can be tinkered with, in my opinion, to bring a better product on the floor in '09/10. I'm not sure it's a given Hedo is, or should, return. I belive the Magic need a bona fide closer, not a sometimes I will/sometimes I won't deliver type of finisher. A post scorer would be a welcome addition to our strictly perimter game. Smith is a really good executive and I'm sure he'll do everything in his power to produce an even better product for the fans of Orlando.

I find it funny that some people think Hedo should go when he was a key reason why the Magic were so successful this year. They made it to the damn Finals this year! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! The core players of Howard, Lewis, Turk, and Jameer should NOT change. What needs to be tinkered with are the role players. Try to get a little bigger at power forward. The Lakers exposed a weakness there. Find a decent center to back up Dwight since Gortat will almost certainly command a salary too big for 10 minute per game guy. That's about all the Magic really need. With a healthy Nelson, an improving Lee, and with Howard making strides in his game this summer, there's no reason the Magic can't be contending for the title again.

As for Chris Bosh, just forget it. Even if the Magic do not re-sign Turk, there simply will not be enough money to bring Bosh to Orlando. He will command a $20 million a year salary, and the Magic will not have nearly enough cap room.

sign and trade hedo on draft day for rasheed wallace. bingo. guy stretches the defense with his 3 pt shooting (yes he can shoot them and fairly well) also he bring the element of a real pf who can 1. pass and 2. play good D on other big men. from there we switch Lewis to the 3 where he will dominate other small forwards with his incredible wing span and height. now shooting guards we have lee and mikeal. we need to do a little tradng and aquire another big body because i dont think we will have gortat. I know this might be wishfu thinking, but Frans Vazquez IS LEADING THE EURO LEAGUE this season in block shots and rebounds!!! Also is 75% fromt he line and has a 68% field goal percentage when in the paint. He can also shoot 10-12 jumpers (needs to be more consitant here). Fran has 1 year left on his contract, time for a buy out and we bring him in at his 11th pick rookie salary (2 mil). Yeeee haw! Or trade alston/battie for someone really good. yee haw mother f';ers! go USF BULLS!

How many more days will the readers have to continue viewing a picture of an LA ball player, when the article is about the Magic?

Turk's street value is not worth $10 mil/year, but unfortunately he is worth that to us. The way this team is made up, we need him....unless we are going to change our style of ball. I think the only free agent that would enable us to keep our current style would be Mehmut Okur. Then we could move Lewis back to the 3 and still have a 3pt threat from the PF position.

Our best chance is that teams try to save cap space for the big free agent crop next year and pass on overpaying Turk....and we sign him for nor more than $7.5-8 mil.

"No disrespect to Hedo, but he's not consistent enough for the kind of money I expect he'll demand ($11M per; four years)," an east coast executive declared. "He wants the ball with the game on the line and responds real well under pressure, but then he'll disappear for a game or two. That's all that's stopping him from becoming a perennial All-Star."

Apparently not; after all, someone is paying them, and that someone feels they're worth it. Are YOU overpaid?

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD OTIS; DON'T SIGN HEDO!!!!!!!!!!

We fans can wait until 2010 if we have too, but everyone else is getting better. San Antonio just got better and so did the Wizards, who will be a playoff team next year. We're going to be hard pressed to make a return to the finals next year, even if Hedo did come back, but he is a liability.

To the fans; there will be a lot of trades and interesting things happening in the next few days, but unfortunately, I don't see our Magic being able to do anything miraculous.

Why not trade for a 2nd round pick and pick someone up to take the roster spot of Mike Wilks or Jeremy Richardson?? I am pretty sure they were 1 year contract players.. BRING IN JERMAINE TAYLOR!!

I'm all for changing our style of play if it means we'll win more games and a title. And also if that means brining in a PF or a "true" closer, something Hedo is not.

Hedo is a fine ball player, but for a starter, he should be putting up better numbers than what he does. Also, his intangibles are horrible because he has so many bad plays every night which leads to the opposing team scoring anywhere from 8-20 points because of his boneheaded plays. These are things that simply arenít worth 10 mil a year. Why would we want to waste money on a guy who can occasionally win you ONE game with ONE game winning shot, when SAID player put you in that situation in the first place? Give the ball to C.Lee and let him become Mr. 4th quarter to go along with JAM. Plus C.Lee has 10x more the athleticism than that of Hedo and can create his own shot too.

This year's draft class is below average, I doubt we could find a quality player.

I've always liked Rasheed Wallace! Mostly because he's such a loose cannon, but he also can play some defense. And yes, he could (and would) teach Dwight some moves. It would also give us some toughness that we need.

I think all the Magic need to do is get DWade, Lebron, Dwight, Gasol and Kobe.... for their starters.
Then the backups could be just nobodys from the D-League all for minimum salaries. Well maybe get Shaq & Steve Nash & Grant Hill. They would be good fill-ins.
I bet that with those players and Coach K, Coach D'Antoni, Coach Popovich or Coach Jackson... they would win the championship 5 years in a row!

I am not for changing anything, personally. Next year, C. Lee will be a year better and Jameer will be healthy. I don't think we are that far away. Add to that...hopefully... one consistent solid new offensive move by Dwight and we are there. I like C. Lee a lot, but I am not convinced how well he can handle the ball yet (<---poor sentence structure).

There is something to be said for chemistry which is why Rasheed Wallace will NEVER don a Magic uniform. If we can keep this thing together by paying Turk even $8 mil for 4 years, I'm in. My next choice would be Okur. 3rd choice would be to wait until 2010 and play Lee at the 2 and insert Pietrus at the 3.

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/orlando.htm

Interesting scenario if we let Turk go, insert Pietrus at the 3, and wait until next year's free agent crop. Basically would have solid starting line-up in place, but have enough money to sign a max free agent in 2010.
