Kentucky's John Calipari Facilitates One-and-Done Players' NBA Dreams

In 2005, the NBA Players' Union reached a new collective bargaining agreement . The new rule stated that players must be at least one year removed from high school, placing a minimum age of 19 on athletes' entry, which then put the nix on prep-stars jumping directly into the league.

Do we want UK to be a "springboard" for the NBA? Do we want UK known for this "one and done" thing? Should UK recruit this type of player, or should they recruit "student-academic-athlete s", kind of like Coach K does at Duke???

I can see both sides to this. However, how can we build a team if so many players jump ship after just one season? Where is the consistency???

Good point. Tubby never won the championship at UK with one of his teams. He did it with a Pitino team.

I guess I would like to see basketball players come in who are good students academically as well as pretty good ball players. Get the "smart" kids. Get kids who see that they are getting a free education to help prepare them for a career in whatever field they choose. Basketball is their ticket (scholarship) to getting this. Playing basketball in the NBA (or Europe) doesn't last nearly as long as practicing medicine or being an optometrist, etc.

thats the ideal thing, but until the NBA gets on board and makes it that a player can not join their league until a certain time then this will continue.
.... people bitch about coach Cal and 5 players leaving. To be honest at the beginnin gof the yr only 2 were considered ready to go, Wall and Patterson, the other players just developed quickly except Orton

What if the NBA got on board with a rule that required everyone playing in the NBA to have a college degree with at least a "C" average????

it will never happen. The NBA doesnt care if they can read or write, as long as they can hit a jumper. The idea thing is to bring about the baseball rule. U can come out as a high schol senior or u can go to college and spend 3 yrs at least. I hope that is what they do soon, but i doubt they will

You are probably right about the NBA. I like your idea about the baseball rule. Maybe it will happen someday, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

They should pay college players.
Maybe not a lot, and pay them all equally.
They do bring lots of money into the schools.
