Patrick McManamon: West forces Arenas to strike out

Great players win games at key moments in the NBA, especially in the playoffs. So it went Saturday in the heated and chippy first game of the first-round NBA playoffs series between the Cavaliers and Washington ... Full Story

The Wizards are a bunch of trash-talkers and dirty players that deserve what they got. Kick some booty, LBJ.

Why ,when Lebron was tangled up with Haywood, did Z come running right in to back his man,but last year when Wallace drew blood from Z's head, not one Cav lifted a finger to help.In fact ,next game there were the usual hugs all around.I don't get it.Hate to say it ,but if Z was a black man, would help have arrived?
I just call em like I see em.
It's great to see Big Ben in there to intimidate a little bit too.
And I'll bet that one well-placed elbow by LBJ will cause Mr.Blatch ,or whatever that loser's name is,to think twice about the overly hard fouls.
Now it's basketball time at the "Q".
Let's cut the crap and play ball-GO CAVS!!!

wasn't it great to see a little bit of retaliation on the part of lebron.....enough was enough, and just think what kind of a beating he could of and would have taken if he just took that abuse.....bravo lebron !!!!

West is such a dedicated, hard nosed talented player who has the feel for a playoff game. I think he will be our key to sucess in the future, or even this years playoffs. I think he deserves a larger contract in this upcoming off-season. We all can agree on that.

Yes, what says "talented player" and "defensive standout" more than shooting 30% from the field and allowing a guy to score close to a point a minute. Bring back Gund and try to lowball West for five years.

Patrick,
One correction on your well said column. There actually were handshakes before the game (Gilbert and Lebron hugged at mid court). Of course that didn't mean a thing once the ball went up.

Also...the race comment. Huh?? If that is what you are thinking when you watch a heated moment in a basketball game then this country still has such a long way to go. If you want to look for racism then maybe you can come up with it in your head like that. But honestly, who did LeBron go and hug as soon as the buzzer sounded and the Cavs were Eastern Conference champs? Z. If he wanted to he probably could have found someone of his own race...but I think he just wanted to hug his teammate and friend.

Hey Joeshmo, what, are you a relative of West's??
I agree with alan t in that the only reason Agent 0 did not score in the closing minutes is that he couldnt put one foot in front of the other. When he was fresh he lit up our boy Delonte like an xmas tree. I do not care how "dedicated" you are, he got torched. Better hope the Wiz doesn't save that big mouth Gilbert for the 4th qtr !!!!

SAME OLD GILBERT.

Can't back up his trash talk. How do you airball a 2 foot layup LOL!!! I'm surprised he hasn't predicted a 50 pt. game vs. the Cavs yet?

"Gaygent Zero?"

are you 12 years old? i'm sure you got some trolls to laugh to that because if you don't have educated comments to post then why bother, we all know that Gilbert isn't 100%, and of course we're going to support your boy LeBron but c'mon, the wizards lost that game because they couldn't consistently make open shots near the end, no need for the trolls to get ahead of themselves,

Overall I thought it was a great game till the end, the back and forth buckets were great between both teams, as a fan of NBA basketball this was a great game to watch,

It was a good idea for LeBron to give it like he takes it on Blatche, as it shows that he's not going to be punked. Arenas needs to stop smiling and just be all-business during the game, Deshawn will play better, so will Butler and Jamison, losing the first game in this series means nothing for the wizards (it could be beneficial as a wake-up call, extra fire etc.), but winning the second game is vital so I expect a very physical second game that should be fun to watch.

Dan,

Perhaps this happened before I got to my seat. I watched LeBron carefully when he went out just prior to tipoff and he didn't acknowledge anyone. Every other game I've covered he's gone out of his way to shake the hand of everyone on the opposing team. That's what I was referring to ...

Thanks for the comments.

Pat, am I missing something? What's with the multiple Canada references? And to clarify Dan C, they slapped hands and hugged during the shoot around, but you're right, at the tip, he was all business.

Well I don't think "defensive standout" has anything to do with shooting 30% from the field? I could be wrong, but those are opposite ends of the floor moron!!

Uhh ... I clearly happened to mention that he gave up nearly a point a minute, so I don't know who's the moron here. Do you require braille?
