Tim, according to the cap rules, could we not offer a package deal for Maggette and Brand? IE - Lewis, Cook, Reddick & Fran Vasquez' rights for Brand and Maggette?

You're kidding, right? It just amazes me to see some of the trades people come up with. Why in HELL would the Clippers want the rights to Vasquez, along with a player that TWO head coaches have no deemed not good enough to play in the NBA? Trades have to benefit both parties. Your trade scenario does nothing for the Clippers except get them an overpaid Rashard Lewis, a seldom-used big man, a Duke bust, and a girly-man Spaniard that's too afraid to come across the pond and play some real basketball.

I guess we'll find out just how badly Maggette wants to return to Orlando. Landing him would be a MAJOR coup. With him and Battie's return to help out Dwight in the front court, the Magic will be a major factor in the East next season. Unfortunately, I tend to believe Maggette will do what every other player does.....follow the money. Not that I can blame him.

I have been an Otis Smith apologist, but it sure would be nice to have about $2 mil/year back from that deal to add to MLE to sign Maggette.

You can't add money to the MLE. Either you are under the cap and use the money you have left, or you are over the cap and receive the MLE. So it is actually better to be over the cap and the get the 5.8 million exception than to be 23 million under the cap. The best thing to do with Maggette would be to offer him a two-year contract with a player option for a third. Then give the wink-wink that the Magic will "take care" of Maggette on his next contract when the Magic own his Bird Rights. By then, Maggette will have had a chance to prove that he WAS the man to put the Magic over the top (Hopefully by summer 2010 we'll be sitting on a couple of Larry O'Brien trophies). Go Magic!

Thanks for the post. I never have quite had my arms around how that works. Thanks for the clarification.

The one thing that kills me is that these columnist write that only 2 teams have enough cap space to sign big free agents and the rest of the teams are going to use their MLE to get FA. If the Magic offer Maggette the MLE and he does not accept how is he suppost to go elsewhere for more money if almost all the teams have the same thing Orlando has. Where is he going to go for more money. I think if the Magic offer him the MLE that he will accept it since he wants to come back. Otis get Maggette with the MLE and use the veterans exception or whatever it is called and sign Kurt Thomas.

i think it would be great if maggette were signed and then a trade for an enforcer for dwight at power forward - lee from NYK, haslem from the heat or just a joey dorsey type (and we did not trade away a player for that 2nd round pick because <insert damn good answer here>)

Jake- Fernadno Vina played baseball. He is now a commentator on Baseball Tonight. I could care less about the Magic or Orlando. I like the Miami Heat. If you call me names again I will punish you.

Who wants to play for the Magic anyhow? Vince Carter is from Central Florida and I do not see him volunteering to play in Orlando. The Magic should move to St. Louis.

Well forget Brand it's between the Clippers and the Warriors.
And right now the inside track for Corey seems to go through the Spurs.
