Magic never looked confident in Game 5
#3 May 14, 2008
I have been a Piston fan for 30 years. If any one has any doubts about what happened let me assure you, this series was very close. For most of the series the Magic played solid defence. The Pistons did not shoot well and the Magic had a lot to do with that. The NBA seems to have a right of passage. The old Pistons could not get past the Larry bird Celtics year after year. In spite of the Celtics winning the Pistons and their fans knew the Pistons were the younger better team. When they finally beat Boston they had to go through it again with the Magic and Kareem Lakers. They had to learn what it took to win a championship. The great Michael Jordan and the Bulls took years to get by the Pistons and win a Championship. The young Magic team is right where they should be. They will get over the hump and no one will be able to stop them.

The Magic come to games ready to play two quarters; their competition comes ready to play four quarters. The results are not surprising. They need to "shut up" until they can "put up"

To be elite we need better point guard who can shoot 90% from the line.
Turk needs to be 6th man. I've never seen someone look more awkward driving to hoop and miss so many layups.
Other reserve players missed layups to frequently as well.
Zebras at times calling touch fouls on Magic while Detroit was reaching in all game long. Really helped to build that 21-3 TO margin.

The Magic are a couple of players and a great deal of respect away from a championship team.
As for the two players, they need a point guard who is at least 6'4" so he can see the plays developing and guard the opposition's point guard. Nelson can't do either of these. They also need a large forward whose primary responsibility is rebounding. Much too often you see Magic players bailing out and heading back down court when their shot is still in the air. Move Hedo to shooting guard.
As for respect, the officials show them very little. Detroit hacked their way through this series and rarely had fouls called against them. The referees allow Detroit to play that way like no other team. Plus, the magic couldn't make thier foul shots in the rare opportunities they were afforded. Detroit shot lights out from the line. When the Magic earn respect as a tough team, the officials will give them calls and not a minute sooner. Doesn't seem right, but that's life.
Future looks good for the young Magic team.
