Rob Oller commentary: Cavs might entertain, but won't win much | The Columbus Dispatch

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

The Cleveland Cavaliers resemble the math wiz who proves the theorem of addition by subtraction, but still flunks the class.

Maybe you meant this article for the Miami Heat and your math was just fuzzy like the writing and you were really referring to the losing record of the Miami Heat. Would you kindly recalculate your position after tonight's game.

The NBA has 4 or 5 compelling teams worthy of watching and then a glut of mediocre teams who will battle with fury for a 7th seed in April. No thanks.

The Cavaliers are now a card-carrying member of the "7th seed club".

Can't wait... Mid-January, 13 degrees, a foot of snow on the ground, and you're gonna drive all the way to downtown Cleveland to see, uh, Mo Williams?

I see the Cavs being a playoff contender. This is not the team that LeBron James started with. They have more depth and talent than people give them credit for. A guy like James outsshines everybody. His style of play doesn't always compliment others, they have to compliment him. You saw that last night to a degree.

People forget that while LBJ is gone, the Cavs are allowed to replace him. It's not going to be 4 on 5 as it was at times in the Boston series. You won't get a triple double out of his replacement but LeBron didn't account for 40 wins all on his own.

The Cavs will win 45 games this year which should be good for a 5 or 6 seed. They will probably win a first round series before falling to somebody like Orlando in the second round.

If the Cavs are going to become true title contenders, they'll need a star player but they might be able to lure somebody into town next year if they show some fight this year.

I don't want to diminish how good LeBron was, but this team got quality minutes from people when LeBron was out.

It seemed the Heat went into "Cavs mode" late in the game last night. I wonder if leaving Cleveland will get LeBron the support he needs to win. I think he dominates play so much with his strong "one-man-take-on-all " style that even the other Heat stars had to step back and let him run. It was nice to see him put up quite a few bricks.

It's hard to say how the Cavs will fare this year. Without Lebron they really will be a completely different kind of team. We'll just have to see how good they can be. I'm going to be optimistic.

Oller, weren't you the one who started out the year saying the Buckeyes never disappoint? Well, it took all of six or seven weeks to disprove your theory.
To your readers, let's just say: Consider the source.

Go Cavs!
Very entertaining game.
Have been a Cavs fan since the Cleveland Arena days.
Glad to see it get back to being what it should be- a TEAM game-not LeQuit and everyone else.

I'm not getting your logic. Since when does having basketball players that aren't celebrities equated with how well a team plays? Maybe the fact that we HAD a "celebrity" on our team and that "celebrity"-sized eqo is what cost our team in the first place.

Being the pessimist doesn't make you cool or right. It just makes you one more people the Cavs are gonna prove wrong.

Nice call Rob, especially on saying there will be low attendance. Last night was over 20k. The average during the "kings" tenure was 19k. Aaron Portzline might be the only decent sports writer for the dispatch.

Rob Oller doesn't follow the NBA, I'm not sure he really follows any sports. He's kind of like a Tony Kornheiser without talent. Oller thinks his funny, but he lacks wit. He thinks he's worldly, but he's a suburbanite drone. His writing reveals that he's a man of average intellect and skill. I don't know how he keeps a job.

Mostly, the good writers don't stay at The Dispatch long. Oller and Hunter have been coasting by for years. They should stick with what they do best: running interference for Ohio State.
