I'm surprised that this article contained no comments about the practice of
baserunners sliding wide of 2nd in order try and take out the infielder and break up the doubleplay. If baseball is going to insist that fielders touch the base then they have to crack down on baserunners who try to break up doubleplays by barrelling thru the pivotman.
Originally I didn't like the concept of the "neighborhood play" but the more I watched baseball the more I realized that it is a common sense approach which helps reduce injuries. I hate to see infielders (or catchers, for that matter) get creamed by baserunners who are then praised for, "playing good hardnosed baseball".
