Anyone shocked? Spring training for the most part is a big joke. Just another way for MLB to rack in money. They don't train, they party for the most part, big deal pay $20 for cheapest seat to a Red Sox game here and maybe you see the starters one turn at bat. You call that training, just like the NFL training begins in APRIL for MLB and SEPTEMBER for the NFL. We the sucker fans get short changed.

Hey, Lowe pitched a great game and once Myers settled down, he did very well.

Nothing to be even remotely concerned about.

I guess now we start our 161 game winning streak!!!

Yeah if I remember correctly we lost the first game last year too. I heard the same crap last year and we one.

Myers was too amped up to start the game. He left some pitches up over the middle of the plate. The Braves just did what professional ballplayers are supposed to do, deposit those pitches in the seats. Lowe kept the ball down and the Phillies hit the ball on the ground. Some nights it will be seeing eye singles, other nights like last night it was just routine ground outs.

We are 1-8 in season openers in the last 9 years. If losing the first game means we repeat as champions, so be it!

Very good point, The Phillies are always slow starters and often have poor months of April and make it up in August and September. If they didn't start so poorly what fun would it be watching the Mets choke every year.

To Philly Fluck: You are an idiot. Have fun cheering on all the loser teams in the state of Maryland.

To Man Pole Dad: You are just as bad agreeing with the loser mentioned above.

They folded down the stretch and I'm a Met's fan. Should be a good battle this year.

What a sorry piece of journalism. I wonder if the author of this article was even at the game. How could she know what the difference between being nervous and just getting some work in at the bullpen?

The author writes:
"Myers allowed eight hits, including three home runs and two doubles. The 28-year-old right-hander had the coaching staff so nervous that Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee called for J.A. Happ to start warming up in the third."

Happ never came into the game. Where is the editor to proof read this article. This is an example why the Morning Call is only 1/5 of the size of what it was in hits heyday in the 1970's.

What a horrible article from an even more sorry gossip paper relying on presumptions of how people feel rather than the facts.

Happ never came in the game but he did warm up in the 3rd when Myers surrendered a leadoff double that was 2 ft from being another HR. I think all they were trying to do is bring former Ironpig JA Happ into discussion but pretty irrelevant considering he didn't throw a single pitch.

The Phillies offense wasn't "bad". The Braves pitcher was just great.
Lowe is already a good pitcher. Now, put in the fact that his new team calls him the "ace" of their staff...He didn't want to let his new team down. Now, put in the fact that he remembers how the Phillies kicked his butt in the NLCS last year when he was with the Dodgers...He wants some "revenge"...He wanted this game.
Lowe is a better pitcher than Myers and he had all of the above on his side too.
Sometimes you just have to give credit to the other team.
Myers, on the other hand, is NOT the Phillies "ace". He pitched against another teams ace by default...Hamels is still coming off his injury. It should have been Hamels vs. Lowe...That might have had a different outcome.
Myers made some bad mistakes in the first few innings... It's called throwing MLB hitters "meatballs" right down the heart of the plate. That's like Christmas to them.
Game one is over.
They have 161 games to still play this season. Anyone that thinks any team will go 162-0...needs to stay off the pills.
The Phillies have the same chance as last year to go all the way....1 in 30...Just like every other team.
