This signing is a risk at best. Never trust a [player who has a better than his average year on " FREE AGENCY YEAR"!!! A lot of them are just trying harder to get a huge contract. Let's hopr BYRD is the exception rather than the rule. I think we very much NEED a front line catcher like the Pirates free agent and a good starting pitcher , one who can pitch at LEAST 7+ innings per outing. But let's give Mr. Byrd a more than fair chance to prove his worth {he can do it!}!!!!

I agree with Earl Scott Jr's comments lets give BYRD a chance and see what happens. I do not think he will do as bad as BRADLEY did but, most of all the CUBS need a starting pitcher and a closer. I really liked Rich Harden they could have used him. LILLY will not be ready till May and Zambrano has to get his act together or else from a pitching standpoint the Cubs will be in trouble. Gregg is horrible as a closer and Marmol is too wild with his control.

Another 15 mil and 3 yrs out the window.
Hendry will be long gone when this contract runs out. No pitching or catching, but just another no can do outfielder.
Since when is better than Bradley the criteria for signing players?

In today's market, 15 million over three years isn't bad. He hit .281, 20 HR, 89 RBI last year. I'm willing to give him a shot. I'm not a big Fukudome fan though, especially as a starting RF'er. That's a spot you typically want to see some power from.

Since when has "power" worked as the formula for winning here in Chicago? DUH, never!!! Our best recent years lately 1984 and 1989, we had a little SPEED and good DEFENSE. There are better ways to score than waiting for a home run after three straike outs.

You're right that power alone isn't the answer, you have to have a team that's balanced. This formula doesn't seem to happen too much these days, but teams use to use C, 2B, SS, CF, for speed and defense. 1B, 3B, RF, LF, were where you expected power, and would sacrifice a little defense, for the ability to knock one out.
If Fukudome were like Keith Moreland, or Andre Dawson, I'd be his biggest fan.

According to www.chicagocubs.cc Hendry gnashed some teeth along the way. But after failing to land Curtis Granderson from the Tigers or Melky Cabrera from the Yankees, and unwilling to wait to see if the Red Sox were crazy enough to make Jacoby Ellsbury available, he signed Byrd on Thursday to a three-year,$15 million deal. He would have signed him for one or two years, but the Levinson brothers got three out of Hendry -- just as the agents did for Milton Bradley last winter -- and the more I think about it, why not?
