Long before Drew Butera stepped into the batter's box with the bases loaded and one out on Saturday night, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire knew even if that exact scenario arose - the game on the line in extra innings - Joe Mauer was not an option.

...like they used to. Arguably the greatest left-handed pitcher of all time (Sandy Koufax) used to pitch on three days rest with an arm so arthritic that it literally would bleed after his common-place complete game, 130 pitch shutout victories. Now-a-days we have 27 year-old multi-millionaire batting champions who are not even considered for pinch-hitting duties in a game-winning situation... when all that is needed is for the guy to loft a fly ball. I gotta believe that it would have taken a gun to keep Killebrew, Oliva or Carew away from the bat rack during the 10th inning on Saturday. And we wonder why football has surpassed baseball as America's favorite past time.

The only mistake Gardy made Sunday was not batting Wilson Ramos third.

I agree with Ramos...we'll give Gady a pass on batting Ramos 8th in his big-league debut, but...
today it should be in Mauer's 3 hole.

Maybe you should cite someone as proof...not someone who couldn't pitch past age 30.

Mauer is made of chalk. He will be a frequent flyer to the DL.
