Pretty amazing that the Mets couldn't come up with a package at least as good if not better. Colorado took a pitcher coming off surgery. Where the hell is Minaya? Holliday would have been a perfect fit. Minaya proves once again that he sucks.

1 You want the Mets to give up good prospects for a player going into his last year before FA and his agent being Scott Boras, who NEVER has his clients sign in their walk year???... Get a clue... |

I have a clue. the Mets didn't have to give up the farm for this guy and they alraedy have a Boras client, Beltran. If holliday has a great year you sign him. This was a no brainer. |

How do you know what the Mets would have had to give up to trade for Holliday? Oakland gave up their #1 and #3 prospects up for Holliday. What makes you think the Wilpons want to pay $20 million plus for 6 years to resign Holliday? Holliday already turned down $85 million/5 years from the Rockies... Exactly what does that have to do with Beltran being a Boras client?. Boras took Beltran to FA when the Astros offered $108 million/7 years... Sounds like you're just angry that Minaya doesn't do enough to bring in great players. Keep in mind the Mets will not spend like the Yankees... |

SNY is a money machine and the Mets can definately afford Holliday. And of course I'm angry at Minaya, but I've felt this way for a few years for many different reasons. I think he is an incompetent BS artist. As far as prospects are concerned, if the Mets had to come up with a package including Gomez and a couple of their top minor league pithers you do it. You already know what you're getting in holliday, a young perrenial allstar and MVP candidate. He's a stud and getting better. |
|||
First, I don't have any knowledge if SNY is as you referred to as a "money machine". Besides, the Mets are only a 1/3 owner (Time Warner and Comcast own a 1/3 each) of SNY... Second, what makes you think the Mets can "afford" Holiday at a minimum of, let's say,$120 million/6 years? Look at Holliday's numbers away from Coors Field. Almost 50 points lower. Citi Field is a pitchers park and could reduce Holliday's numbers even more. The Mets need pitching, first and foremost. Besides, the Wilpons have stated they won't want to expand the payroll much more than last year's number. They just don't have the overall revenue numbers like the Yankees... Third, as far as Omar is concerned, he was the one that got the Wilpons to spend more money than they did since taking over complete ownership of the Mets from Doubleday. Do you think Jim Duquette could have convinced the Wilpons to spend on Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, and Carlos Delgado? I sincerely doubt it. I will say Omar hasn't shown a solid track record when it comes to trades... |

Minaya took over the team at it's most desperate time. The Wilpon's were a laughing stock in baeball because of the Kazmir and Art Howe debacles. They would have listened to anybody. Obviously we have different oppinions of Holliday and Minaya. I know we need pitching but we also need a righthanded power bat in the outfield. Holliday would benefit greatly by being surrounded by Beltran Wright and Reyes. It'll be much tougher to pitch around him. |

Y'all have made good points but it is obvious that it is going to waste. |

I'm not sure I would classify the Wilpon's as "laughing stocks" at that time. While I agree the Art Howe hiring was based on a 10 minute interview with Fred Wilpon, the Kazmir trade was based on Rick Peterson's insistence he oould "fix" Victor Zambrano's flaws. Bad trades happen with all ML teams and the Mets have had their fair share over the years... As for Holliday, I don't doubt he would have helped. A lineup with Reyes, Delgado, Wright, and Holliday would have been formidable. All I'm saying is the game of baseball is more economically driven (especially in these difficult times) today than ever. Since the Wilpons took over complete ownership, they have been more cautious spending money than the Yankees. Their revenue streams don't support spending $20+ million on multiple players... One thing to remember: When the Yankees had the opportunity to sign Carlos Beltran at a "discount", they took a pass to trade for Randy Johnson based on fiscal realities. Even the Yankees have had to restrain spending from time to time... |
