Orioles not planning to increase offer to Teixeira

Full story: Baltimore Sun

Orioles officials left the Bellagio Hotel this afternoon still feeling they have a shot at signing prized free agent Mark Teixeira, though all signs continue to point to their having to overcome long odds.

Great job Andy. Getting outbid by the Nationals for Teixiera, and trading Ramon to the Reds but getting Freel dumped on you. But hey, you saved $2 million. Good job. You signed Izturis for $6 million dollars when you will get about as much production from him as you did from our minor league guys last year. Now we're going after Treanor. Roberts and Markakis will definitely sign contract extensions now. The team is so much better.

I'm all for rebuilding but you can't do it all through the draft. We are not the Tampa Bay Rays. The O's had a proud tradition and a proud fan base. They could take 10 years to get better and do it on the cheap because they didn't have a fan base to begin with. The Orioles have much more resources then the Rays and a lot of teams. The problem with what the O's are doing is that they are pinning all of their hopes on guys that have never played a single major league game. They may be busts. They may blow out their arms in AA. Then what? We need to start stockpiling the farm while also improving the product and the Major League level. Both can be done. There are quite a few teams that have top farm systems and still sign free agents and win games at the major league level. Why should we have to play this "faith game" with Angelos, McPhail, and their followers when we deserve better? We should be trading with teams that are doing salary dumps like the Padres and Marlins. They are practically giving major league talent away.

Do you have any indication that the O's management understands just how big the fan backlash will be if their bid for Tex is not higher than the Nats'?
I have never (and still do not) believe that we have a shot at signing him (and frankly I'm not sure that's a bad thing), but we BETTER outbid the nats!

some one call McPhail, we NEED to get Teixera....

this is our only shot at luring a big time FA from the Yankees and Red Sox. Him being from Baltimore is the only advantage we have, we need to capatialize. This wont happen again, this is it. The young guys will be along in a few years, we need to have TExiera now, we need to grow a pair and make a move. This is our guy.

They are better with McPhail but he has not extended Markakis or Roberts. The trades were good but the fans are not going to come just because the Orioles decide Texiera is only worth what they decide to offer. Boston is not stupid and they know to pay up to get what they need. No Texiera and many more empty stands that could have been filled. Thats the reality.

If anybody in this town actually thought andy was going to sign mark then you need your head examined. He accomplished exactley what he wanted to in they made a intial offer which they new was going to be low a low ball offer. Now they can at least say we tried. Don't you all understand that this team will never be any good and will continue to be a basement dweller for many years to come. They will now focus there attention on two steve trachisal clones and some 35 year old catcher that they will sign until weiters starts. Then spring training will start and dave t will tell us how we will play smart and be fundementally sound. And the whole process will be the same as last year and the year before that and the year before that. END OF STORY

Seriously people, calm down. I'd bet money that they would increase their offer if need be. They're either going to get knocked completely out of the running (200 million +), or he's going to decide he wants to try to win it all next year.

They know what he represents.

I'm sorry, but the idea of giving a guy who is a lifetime .290 hitter $20 mil+ a year is ridiculous.

If Angelos really is willing to part with that kind of money, why not give it to Markakis (lifetime .299 hitter) and Roberts (lifetime .284 hitter). And you would still have enough money to bribe John Miller to come back and announce the games again.

And you wonder why people think baseball is a joke.

The last thing the Orioles want is for Texeria to take their offer. This is obviously a ploy to convince fans that they're trying. My wish is that Texeria takes the offer and then Angelos has a fatal heart attack.

Angelos will always be the most hated man in Baltimore, maybe even more than Irsay. Peter Angelos killed one of the great sports traditions in the country. I truly, truly hope he dies soon. I say that with no remorse. Oh, and his mother was a whore.

Major League baseball is a sick puppy.

Let MLB pay these salaries if they want but don't expect me to show up at the game to help pay for it.

Hopefully those who think its a good thing will show up at the stadium and help foot the bill as well, win or lose.

Typical Orioles. Put out a offer that they knew would be bettered by other teams so they can tell us (the fans) that they "tried". I'm sooooo sick of the Orioles and how they never spend any money. All we have to look forward to is competing for 4th place in the division!!!!!!

Why is Adam Dunn not listed as a contingency plan? He is clearly one of the best free agents out there and yet no one seems to be targeting him. If the O's don't get Tex, Dunn would be a great FA signing.

Gotta love the O's - notorious low ballers. The only player that would get Baltimore fans excited about the Orioles' future is Tex. The only way to get Tex is to be the high bidder - of course he's going to take the highest offer. But the O's can't compete with the Nats? Really? Way to pony up the cash Angelos.

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Leo

The atmosphere is highly combustible today, with people getting in a stew over the smallest little thing. You will also have a tendency to get hot under the collar, especially if someone isn't doing things as quickly as you'd like. Try to stop yourself getting in a rage because once that happens it will be difficult to cool down again. Maybe you need some fresh air?
