Full story: Newsday

Elijah Dukes put both hands up in the air, but he wasn't dancing to any music and waving them like he just didn't care.

What the story doesn't mention is that after his home run, Dukes made a kissing gesture to the Mets dugout as he ran down the first base line, an obvious taunt. So Pelfrey's 4th inning pitch may very well have had a purpose to it.

As to that "off-the-field baggage" the story refers to, here's how wikipedia details it:

"On May 23, 2007 it was reported that his wife filed a restraining order after he threatened to kill her. On June 12, a 17-year-old foster child who was living in the care of a relative of Dukes accused him of impregnating her. Police said the sex was apparently consensual. When the girl confronted Dukes, he allegedly got angry and threw a bottle of Gatorade at her."

Obviously a thug, and not much of a ballplayer to this point. If the Nats weren't so desperate for competent ML players, he might not even have a job.

I do wish there was some what to force him to take at-bats against either Don Drysdale or Bob Gibson in their prime. That would learn him some humility awfully fast.

Elijah Dukes is a thug. It seemed his whole game is based on trying to intimidate people on or off the field. It is ashame because he has obvious talent. However, he will never reach his full potential. His act will grow short in Washington and he will end up just another guy who squandered his potential. Then one day we will pick up a newspaper and be reading something really bad about this guy and we'll all say do you remember that nut job?

he will be out of baseball in 5 years,...either dead, in jail or he'll just become too much trouble to have around.
Reminds me of another child abuser Carl Everett. MLB will not put up with these basketbrawl, gangsta tactics. Go kill yourself, you drain on society and do everyone a favor.

Elijah Dukes doesn't come across as being a best buddy to any guy.
He seems to be the type of hotshot that would sit on a buddy's face, rest his nuts on his chin, then rise slowly to produce several loud farts.
Folks, that's no buddy.

Dukes and Milledge. They're creating a regular Mensa society down there in D.C. Morons.

Talent can only take you so far. Dukes is classless and thoughtless, which makes him a perfect fit for the Bankees. I guess he'll play for them for a few years, then end up in the Independant league. After that he'll be selling crack til he gets capped in the head during a deal gone bad.

I was more concerned with the way Pelf unraveled after the brushback. He was standing on the mound in his "come and get me" stance (which he probably did not want Dukes to accept)...and then he fell apart. Could not get through 5 after getting a 7-1 lead.

I'm more concerned about that. If Pelf backtracks in his effectiveness as the month unwinds, the Mets are in for a very rough time either making the post-season or doing anything if they get there.

You forgot the Marijuana possession on January of 07, or the 4 high schools in 4 years due to attitudes with teachers. Or the 5 kids and 4 baby mommas and his repeated threats to the woman. He threatened one and then followed it up by sending her a text msg: picture of a gun. Dukes is a cauldron of anger and I don't think it's safe for anyone to be around him when he explodes.

Dukes is your typical black hotshot loser athlete. He will be out of baseball in under two years. Him and Melvin Milledge together is a recipe for disaster. I am a Met fan and was doing the "Elijah Dukes Dance" when they traded that talentless thug.
