1 While I agree that the baserunning certainly could be better, especially Swisher's 2 big mistakes against the Sox, but you are missing the reasons sometimes. When the tying or potential go ahead run is trying to score with 2 outs or sometimes less, the guy at first will try for second in order to draw the throw away from home and allow the guy to score. It's a smart move and sometimes ends up with the guy at second being out. Yesterday, Cano tried for 3rd with 1 OUT, not 2 so it was a good play because if he makes it, he can score without getting a hit. It took a perfect relay throw to just get him and they Yankees had already taken the lead. It was a smart baserunning play, not dumb. |

Yep, and as Dennis Green once said, "they are who we thought they were"..That aptly describes the Nats, who were "annoying" last night, but ultimately were the Nats. Did anybody else see the shortstop of the future for the pinstripers last night?

Winning and losing are not pre-ordained. The Yankees struggled to win 2 games each against two teams they "should" have swept, Cleveland (the mistake by the lake) and the other NY team. The Senators, uh, Nationals, have decent offense (for a NL team), and young low-ball starting pitchers, but their defense and relief pitching are atrocious, so the Yankees just have to keep the score within striking distance for 6.5 innings and wait for a mistake, then I like their chances for victory.

I think I already read a version of this column by the Post's Joel Sherman. Uh, Ken, the Yankees won the game. Hurting for a column idea, I take it.

What's with the fluff? They didn't let you into the US Open? Or do you despise the Yankees that much? What about the pathetic Mets?

I want to see the next article Davidoff writes when the Mets play the Nats....is it going to be 'Unthinkable' if the Mets loose a game to the Nats or will we hear more from Davidoff about the injuries or the fact that they were not lucky. Last year when the Yankees went thru injuries to the entire starting rotation (with the exception of Mussina) and Posada, A-Rod, Matsui, Cano and Damon, I didn't hear anyone in media saying "oh the poor Yankees give them credit for hanging in there with all their injuries". And you know what at the end of the year the Yankees won EXACTLY the same number of games as the Mets who never lost a significant positional player to injuries last year. The double standard by the media is amazing!

sometimes you can force incompetence. Sometimes you win lucky.
Just admit with a few nice sentences that the yankees have the second best record in the AL. Comments from you, greedy Lupica, Sherman are always the same bad stuff. |

Ahh... the Yankees won... but not by ENOUGH

1 The Nationals mau have the worst record in baseball, but anything can happen in s short series ( and has in the past.) |

Well the unthinkable is about to happen, and to make it even worse its at the 1.5 billion$ wiflle ball park! A two hit ass whipping by a nobody on the worst team in baseball. Even worse than that is they (the yanks) were no hitted threw 5! What the ###k i cant be-live my eyes. Good luck in October... 2015 mabey!

That was nervewracking, but fun, and an excellent baseball game. And what would be "unthinkable" and "inexcusable" would be for a certain Newsday columnist not to acknowledge an excellent pitching performance by Nationals pitcher John Lannan. A native of Long Island, by the way, with his parents at the game, by the way.

It's wise that you chose your words so carefully - "SHOULD be unthinkable." SHOULD make the writing of your next column easier. Also let's hear no nonsense about the Yanks playing "down to the level" of the Nats. No crow eating is necessary - just give a good pitching performance its due.
