OK, Manuel may have realized that Fernando Tatis might have been a half a season wonder, good move on his part.

Daniel Murphy is a hard worker and should be able to hit left-handers. He only had 1ten at bats vs. lefties in 2008 and had four hits.

I like this !!!! I have posted previously that I felt Murphy s/b the everyday left fielder. The fact that Tatis may platoon in right says that Manuel has little faith that Church can be an everyday starter or that he hasn't fully recovered from the concussions.

Good. Because if Church needs all this time to recover, guess what? We don't need him. The fans are all over Castillo he had double knee surgery and no one cared. Guess what I dont care if Church had concussions hit the ball. If the concussions come back guess what pack your bags...... he's in the same boat as Castillo.

Easy Smitty, let's care a little bit about Church and Castillo. We don't want to turn into cold-hearted Yankees fans. As for Murph, great call. So young and showed quite a bit last season. One of the only bright spots at the end of the season. Let's see what he can do. Hustle certainly won't be a problem.

Nice to see the Mets trying to develop someone and plug him into a starting role---very un-Mets-ish---instead of signing some veteran for LF whose best days came during W.'s first term.
--
And while Murphy seems like a great story, keep in mind that his minor league OPS is less than .800. It'll be interesting to see how his beyond-his-years Oakland A's Moneyball pitch selection will fare now that there are scouting reports on him (I doubt anyone had any team had a 'book' on how to pitch this out-of-nowhere kid last year).
--
But to me, the ability to draw walks is THE barometer for a young player and Murph seems to have that unlike his ballyhooed Binghamton Met teammate, Fernando Martinez, he with the penchant for pitches in the dirt and stints on the DL.

. Geez some of you Mets fans are idiotic, Church says he feels 100% concussion free, all the reports, including Eddie Coleman say he is fine, so get off it.

As for Luis Castillo and the perception that his 2008 season was a down one, his year was not an aberration. His 2008 OPS was only 60 points lower than his lifetime OPS.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/Luis...

And while 60 OPS points is a drop, this is a player whose game is slap, steal and turn the DP. This was never Chase Utley here. Castillo's game is more like Felix Millan's, which is fine and good if it were 1973.

Murphy looks a little sweet.
He will fill in perfectly with the Robby Alomar, Mike Pizza, Rusty Staub, Art Shamsky, Keith Hernandez NY MU TS.
Murphy looks like he can fit in with the Rainbow NY MESS.
Not that there is anything wrong with it.

Sorry, I don't get it. So Church had a bad ending in '08 after trying to come back too soon from, not one, but two, dangerous and disorienting concussions. In view of this, was it so shocking that he ended poorly? Did his solid first half mean so little? And what about those who didn't suffer concussions and ended the season miserably? Are their jobs in jeopardy as well? Whether or not these moves ever materialize, if you're Ryan Church, you have to be hurting a little and feeling just a little less regard for your manager. These guys -and especially a player like Church- don't need fires under their butts to get going. If Murphy outperforms Church this spring, fine, there's plenty of time to announce the move. If Manuel's surprise announcements become too routine -as they perhaps already are- he'll be dismissed by his players and media alike as some kind of court jester. First, the Reyes "move" without the principals informed and now the Church thing. Let's hope the Mets' start is much better than Manuel's.

How soon they forget, Church was the MVP of the team before he got hurt. Plus nobody is mentioning his great fielding and arm strength. His defense is as good as Beltran's. Why can't they have Church and Murphy batting lefty. I thought that was a good thing. Church proved early on that he could hit lefties which came as a surprise because the Nationals didn't give him the chance. Also Manuel is forgetting all of Tatis' clutch hitting. How many chances is he going to get behind Wright & Delgado.
And W.T.F? does "I don't need to see it," Manuel said. "I've seen it." , mean. Don't give the job on blind faith & hope. Make them earn it. If Tatis didn't get hurt then he'd be the starter. Don't get me wrong I like Murphy and hope he is great for a long time. Much better than Evans. Also if Castillo can't hit move Murphy, Wright or Beltran into the 2nd slot. Then you will only have 2 lefties in a row with Delgado & Church. Or bring in Tatis. Move Castillo to 7th or 8th depending on which catcher is starting.
P.S. Who the hell design this new field? Just look at right field fence, are they trying to get someone hurt?

Whoa! Slow down everyone. Geez, if your worried about a player like Church having his feelings hurt then, the player shouldn't be playing, and you shouldn't be a fan, because neither of you get it.
But if you actually read the story and 'COMPREHENDED' it, meaning understand it, then you would have read that Manuel is going off what he saw last year, and to let Church know that he needs to perform or it'll be a platoon situation. I'm sorry, what the he_ll is wrong is that. manuel has already informed Reyes that he may bump him from the top in order to get Castillo of to a good start. The key word there is 'MAY', for all you dumb a-s_s hysterical retards out there. Plus Church stated that he knows why Manuel said it, and that he needs to go out and perform and if he does everything will work out fine. Maybe you illiterate morons should learn how to 'COMPREHEND' a story after you read it.
My god, some of you really should have stayed in school a little longer.

You are as sharp as a marble. W.T.F can't you comprehend ? He said he was giving the LF job to Murphy over Tatis without waiting to see who was playing better during spring training.
And he said," Also, with Church being a lefthanded hitter, I kind of see Murphy being a better hitter right now at this time, so Tatis could go that way [in rightfield]. It all depends on how well they're doing." Now it depends on how they are doing but, before he said,"I don't want him(Murphy) to get into a strictly platoon situation," Manuel said. "I think he's a little better player than that." "Right now at this time." W.T.F? they haven't even started yet!
He is judging him on only his 131 AB..313 (41-for-131) with two homers, 17 RBIs. & a .397 OBP. from last year.
Well if you compare Church's first 131 AB he went .321 (42 for 131) with 7HRs , 26 RBIs & .427 OBP and Tatis went .298 (39 for 131) with 5HRs & 22 RBIs & .351 OBP
Maybe Murphy will be great but, a little competition usually brings out the best in everyone. Can you comprehend that?
