Wally - You really do revel in running people down, don't you? You must have had one miserable childhood to be so filled with sarcasm and venom for everything and everyone about whom you write. I pity you.

The tigers just paid this guy 14 mil to leave, and the mets pick him up. He can't cover the outfield, is 40,and can't hit 200. Another Omar move that will cost a roster spot plus lost games. Ryan Church must be thrilled. Of course Mr Matthews is correct once again.

Big deal, they fill the stands with all the "I was there when Sheff hit his 500th" types probably stretch that to a few games, get something for the press to mull over and over and over make millions for the bargain price of 400K.

Remember Omar put Jose Lima and Victor Zambrano ahead of Heilman putting Heilman in the bullpen and ruining his career and confidence. Yes Heilman was a decent pitcher at one time. Watch as Omar ruins Ryan Church the same way. Omar would never do this to say...... Luis Castillo or Carlos Delgado. Two positions that have as much need for back-up as right field.

I don't like this at all. I especially don't like the timing....Two months of building chemistry during spring and now you bring in a malcontent. We don't need Shef...especially a 40+ yr old Shef. Bad move Omar. I never would have signed him.....$400K or $4.......bad move.

I don't get it? What's the downside here? This article makes no sense. I think the Mets can live without Marlon Anderson.

Another Mets mistake.

No need to worry about Sheff playing the outfield because he will clearly be a pinch hitter only. If Sheff doesn't like it, oh well. The Mets are only paying 400K for a guy that could either help tremendously or not. Either way it is a no brainer for any team to take that chance.

Besides, the Mets don't have a loud mouth spokesperson this season because Wagner is out so they needed to replace that person.

Great article, why the Mets would make this move is mind boggling, Granted $400K is a bargain, but as they say you get what you pay for. 20 home runs is not worth the headaches and disruption he'll eventually cause. They should have let him sign with the Phillies and destroyed their clubhouse.

Sheffield's signing blemished an otherwise great day in Met history. This deal makes no sense at all. Minaya babbled his way through the press conference like a complete tool. Is Church hurt? Is he getting traded for a lefty reliever?
And as far as the stadium is concerned, Wally, move on. The baseball organization has nothing to do with Citi's mismanagement. Further, this deal was cut before Citi hit the skids. Look north of Flushing for a real story about excess, waste, and disrespect for taxpayers and fans, you doofus.

I don't know how anyone can be against this signing. First off, did anyone watch Church last year?(1) his year from April through May was above his career average. yeah, he did great and carried the team, but then he scrambled his brains. After he came back he wasn't the same. There is no guarantee he will be the same player this year.(2) Sheff is a right-handed bat that is needed in the lineup. Either spelling Church against lefty pitching or pinch-hitting, the Mets needed his bat.(3) A straight up switch - Anderson vs Sheff - I'd take sheff's $400 k over Anderson's $1.5 mil.(4) There is no guarantee that Sheffield will be a "cancer" in this locker room. A, he hasn't been one EVERYWHERE he's been, and B, WINNING cures all.

on the other hand he gave Tampa Bay an ace in Kazmir for the next ten years in exchange for a pitcher who always led the AL in walks per 9. Sheff is the T.O. of MLB. Talent, always crying about not being respected by his contract.. and always finding teams that say that he's not worth the headache...

That was Steve Phillips who made the Kazmir trade, get your facts right.
