I think this is also a sign that Castillo is on a short leash, Sheffield is 4th outfielder with Reed as defensive replacement... leaves Tatis as potential starting 2nd baseman if Castillo falters.

I don't understand what the big deal is about signing Sheff. With a near 150 million dollar payroll, his $400,000 salary represents about a one quarter of one percent risk. And the Mets aren't asking him to carry the team. This isn't a Mo Vaughn or Bobby Bonilla situation.
Sheffield is a historically a great player. He's also a guy who said he wants to play for a few more years, so what he does with and for the Mets will decide his future. He has a lot to prove without a multiyear deal and if he messes up NO ONE will sign him - sounds like someone motivated enough that I'd want on my team. And if he doesn't work out? Just release him - If you do, you wouldn't have to try and replace a clean-up hitter, you'd have to try and replace a bench guy.
And as a Mets fan, what would you rather hear if they're down by a run in the 9th inning: "Pinch hitting for Feliciano will be Marlon Anderson" or "Pinch hitting for Feliciano will be Gary Sheffield"? I'd take Sheff any day.
No you're the idiot. Most 40 year olds say they want to keep playing but they can't because like Sheffield, they suck. But, leave it up to the Mets to grab every freakin' has-been available and think they'll revert back to the player they were 5-7 years ago just because they put on a Met uniform. Who else would you like? Want to give Alou another shot, or Sean Green? Let's bring Piazza back too. Idiot....

That's another bonehead move. Castillo should be hanging upside down by his feet in the clubhouse by his short leash. How many lefty AB's will have before he slaps his 1st pathetic weak 2 hopper to 2B?

Don't expect much from the Mets this year. They'll prove to be a boring team.Perez,Maine & Hernandez will be inadequate. They'll get no offense from 2nd base or catcher. Sheffield is a 40 year old, over the hill, troublemaker who the Mets obtained by way of a fire sale. The Mets haven't given Church a chance and D. Wright will not get it done in the clutch.

This is a joke as is Sheffield. Will this team ever learn to stay away from the has-beens? Why is it that every freakin' time they get a bunch of positives going at once that they have to screw it up with something so damn boneheaded it defies logic? He shouldn't take one AB away from anyone, whether it's Murphy, Church, Tatis, Delgado, and especially Evans after the ST he's had. If he does, all this does is make a statement to the kids that no matter how well you play, a veteran, even if he sucks like Sheffield does, will get the nod over you because of what they USED TO be able to do.
When will Mets management stop thinking that any has-been that puts on a Mets uniform will automatically transform themselves into the player they were 5, 6, 7 years ago? IT DOESN"T WORK LIKE THAT!!!!
They just sent Evans to Buffalo. Why not let Anderson go?

I think Marlon goes when they have to activate Livan for the 1st time they need a 5th starter next week.
