Joe Girardi repeated the phrase several times Tuesday night in explaining his decision to go with Brian Bruney in the eighth inning, even after Phil Hughes breezed through the Mariners in nine pitches in the seventh.

It's so stupid that teams have to have an 8th inning guy and a 7th inning guy and a closer nowadays. They can't pitch everyday, so the smaller you make the roles, the more pitchers you're gonna need, and the greater the chances that some of them aren't going to be any good. Teams should get a few good relievers and leave them in for a few innings per game. Like the Yankees were doing with Aceves.
