Of course he won't participate. That's just another reason why the fans don't like him wherever he plays. He is all about himself, he doesn't give a damn about the 12 year old Yankee fan that wants to see him beat everyone else in the HR derby. There is such a disconnect between him and the fans he will never be loved wherever he plays.

Insecurity and constantly being in the spot light. I use to be a fan til he joined the Yankees.

i think thats a great idea.
he doesnt want the derby to mess up his swing.
look at david wright last year. He couldnt get his normal swing back after the all star til the beginning of this year.

Good for you 120! It's a terrific waste of time for the players and the fans. It's filler for a network with time to kill and a complete bore.

Competing in a Home Run Derby will knock his swing off stride? It's like batting practice, isn't it? For the record, the Home Run Derby started in 1985, so Roger Maris didn't compete in one, either. If he had, it would've been held at Boston's Fenway Park. That's where the All-Star Game was played in 1961.

actually its not
batters will try to swing in a upward motion to try to get the ball in the air

"Actually its not {like batting practice}. Batters will try to swing in an upward motion to try to get the ball in the air."

Oh, and they DON'T do THAT in batting practice? I don't know, in all MY visits to Yankee Stadium, I saw the likes of Mantle, Maris, Berra, Mattingly, Jackson, et al, put a LOT of batting practice pitches
into some of the deepest, most remote, parts of the Big Ballpark. You mean to tell me that they didn't use an "upward motion," in their swings, to do that?
If A-Rod is the fan's biggest All-Star vote-getter (and he WILL be), then he owes it to the fans to at least show up for the Home Run Derby. If hitting the ball in an "upward motion," puts him off-stride, then just enter the damn thing to have fun, and satisfy the fans who paid through the nose for tickets. Jeeze, it's ONLY baseball; it's NOT "rocket science." Consider it batting practice, A-Rod! A photo opportunity, and batting practice. Also, a way to say "thanks" to the fans.

I dont blame him, i know its for the fans, but that gets him fatigued, and what happens if he chokes in the spotlight, he will be made fun of foreever, so he rather no be in it.
