It might be worth trying Liriano in the bullpen, bringing Swarzak up and putting him in the rotation. Even with more innings from their starters, the Twins aren't going to have enough bullpen help. The picture is looking brighter, but the Twins haven't really faced any tough teams on the road lately. The NL teams they've played have been slumping or simply not that good. When the Twins play Milwaukee on the road we'll get a better idea of whether the Twins are ready for a push to the playoffs. On the road against the tougher teams they're going to need the extra pitcher.

When Span comes back, Pridie is gone, but another guy ought to go with him to make room for the 12th pitcher. Tolbert can play every infield position except first, he's a good baserunner, and a switch-hitter. Buscher did hit a homer yesterday, but he hasn't done much otherwise. The Twins have plenty of left-handed hitters who have been hitting with power. Buscher is a decent hitter, but he's not good defensively and not a speedster. He contributes most as a back-up for Morneau at first, but Gardenhire has been using Cuddyer at first, perhaps to be sure he has someone in case he demotes Buscher.

Mauer probably should DH twice a week while the club carries three catchers. Let Morales & Redmond play while keeping Joe's bat in the line up. Also, put Liriano in the bull pen for long relief and let Dickey or Swarzak start.
