Why Conservatives Still Share a Tent with Calhoun
Sam Tanenhaus has an important article in the New Republic on movement conservatism’s entanglement with the ideological underpinnings of slavery. This is hardly a secret. Liberals have read coded racism into “states’ rights” rhetoric for decades. But Tanenhaus is making a subtler point. Conservatives are not closet racists; rather, as evidenced by their talk of nullification and their flirtation with electoral college rigging, they have internalized the sectionalist dogma of Sen. John Calhoun in such a way that seals their demographic fate. Conservative Republicans risk becoming a “lost cause” party that’s designed to “resist, ignore, or even overturn the will of the electoral majority,” Tanenhaus writes.

to get what they want they'll have to overturn the will of the electoral majority.

Gasoline is already $4.25 throughout Southern California and in excess of $5 at some stations. The price has risen every day for 21 straight days.

Raising the minimum wage will put more money into workers pockets and they'll spend it creating a greater demand for goods and services which the suppliers will have to meet by increasing production and hiring people to meet it. Lower wages insures a stagnant market and slow or stalled economic growth.

If you raise the minimum wage to $9, then how much should you pay those already making $9?

Flacknasty seems to now be in favor of legislating from the bench: "Virginia v. West Virginia, 78 U.S. 39 (1871), is a 6-to-3 ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States which held that where a governor has discretion in the conduct of the election, the legislature is bound by his action and cannot undo the results based on FRAUD. The case implicitly ratified the secession of the state of West Virginia from the state of Virginia, and explicitly ratified that the counties of Berkeley and Jefferson were part of West Virginia."

It's $3.46 here at the corner. That's up from the low of $3.14. Gas truck was filling the tanks when I took the girls to church. I wonder if the price will change.

California has a special problem because bicycle-riding environmentalists have the goal of eliminating automobiles.

Costs are driven by special gasoline blends and lack of refinery capacity due to environmentalist opposition to new construction.

Melvin you are arguing about something not in evidence in 1861. What you are talking about happened 10 years later. If you look at the flag of West Virginia the date on the stone is June 20 1863.

So you're saying the Supreme Court rules on cases occurring in the PRESENT? That's obviously what happened with civil rights. That's what Nuc and Homer have been trying to tell you, the action in 1863 was ILLEGAL, but the 1971 court went along with it, even though they called it FRAUD. You know, out of the lot of illiterate Grumpy Old Pricks on here, you might be at the head of the class.

Galt supports abolishing West Virginia.

Romney would have carried the re-constituted Virginia and the Democrats would have two fewer US Senators.

Win-win!

After all the looting, polluting, and drug culture growth that the Masseys and their uneducated minions have brought about, I don't think Virginia wants it back...maybe a new SCOTUS decision could force them to take it?
