I am working on a project that may lead to a possible book. I am interested in hearing from anyone who was EVER at Montrose School (a juvenile facility closed in the 80's) or anyone who knew someone who was there.
The data I am gathering has to do with the treatment of juveniles at that (and other ) facilities in Maryland, and I would welcome hearing from anyone ever in any juvenile facility that housed FEMALES only, starting in the 50's and continuing through to today.
I do NOT need to know your name or anything that is too personal. I am only interested in general treatment of juveniles in such facilities, and how the treatment has changed over the years. I would like an email contact so that I can send a questionnaire, and to make futher email contact if more data is needed. However I do NOT need to have any more personal info for this project. It is to do with GENERAL information only.
Thanks
My mother was there in the late 1930's. I have many photos of her in front of some of the buildings mentioned. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who had family member there during that time period.

Hi everybody, I'mmmmm Baaacckkk! I HATE email becuz r hand messed up & hard 2 type. OK, on Field side. As u drove up past church & rounded bend, the high school was on left. With me so far? If u went straight, the admin bldg was on R. Across from that was the cottage that I can't remember the name of but on the other side was Putts. If u went past the admin bldg, U came to New cottage on R & Wilson cottage (the biggest & oldest, it had a plaque on it saying something like built 1860 for women of ill repute or something like that) on L. Across rd from Putts & Wilson was mansion/castle?. Still with me? Now turn around and look at school. To R of school was Guttmacher (was orientation when I was there. To R of that was Meyers. When I 1st got there Meyers was for the oldest girls & Putts was 4 honor club. Shortly after they switched. New cottage was LOCK UP!! Single padded walls cells w/ mattress on floor, slot on bottom of door to slide paper meals thru and slide on door 2 look thru etc. Anyway, 2 get back 2 my ?. After that mental tour oes anyone know the name of that cottage? Gotta run. Will try 2 get back sooner. Bye

I was there when the New Cottage was built. I was in Meyer cottage in 1965. It was called the sister cottage because some rooms could accommodate two or more people. My sister and I were there together. There were also three sisters there with the last name of Coates. I remember everything you spoke about.

Wow! I found this site while trying to recall the name of the place I was sent to in 1959. I was a victim of child sexual abuse who became a chronic runaway. I got stuck in Montrose so I wouldn't run away again before going to court. I LOVED it. This was the first place I had ever lived where I felt safe. I was treated just fine. I loved having rules that were the same every day. I only stayed for 6 weeks, because when my case came up, they recommended that I be released. I cried all the way home.
Blessings, love, and all good things to all of you who were there.

You were lucky. After my 28 days of detainment I was sent back by the court for commitment. I stayed a year and half because I really had no where to go. I met a lot if wonderful staff and peers. I went on to great things as I got older and being there made me a better person. Good luck to you.

Hi everybody, Still no one from my time!! When I was there, Meyers cottage had a porch that slept 4-6 people. I don't remember any other rooms with multiple beds. They bugged me forever to move onto porch. I said no forever until I finally agreed. I guess about my last month was in there. It turned out to be great. I have 1 question for Jak? I suppose you are female? The reason for that question is bcuz Montrose was NOT co-ed thru 1st half of 69. Glasco, thanks for responding. No sisters were living on Field side or at Field school when I was there as far as I remember.

I was in Montrose I believe in 196 to 1968. Spent 3months in the dungeon another 3 months in solidity confinement. Read anything could I get my hands on. Now I read a lot. I remember the army coats we had to wear, the fire escapes, Ms Frederick and her Imperial car. I remember the horrible milk which I can't drink to this day. Mom transferred me to a Catholic school in 68 I believe. I remember protesting all the rules they had. I wasn't the most popular cheerleader. Don't really remember too many girls from then but I know that this experience taught me a lot about myself and I am forever grateful I went there. Would not change a thing because it might change who I am today.
