Its too bad really, that its just a cheapo-spec FZ6 with Gixxer body appearance.

Not true. Engine is spec'ed for better bottom and mid range and higher end digital fuel injector and seat, peg, grip ergonomics are redone. brakes and front suspension are a step down though. Steel frame is a stressed member so less vibration but a bit heaver than non-R.
Yamaha is not dumb making the FZ6 only $300 more expensive, you need to sit on both bikes to see advantages with the R model.

I've had my FZ6R for about 5 weeks now and 1700 miles. I personally love the bike all around. The styling, lower seat hight, more relaxed seating postion, and under carriage exhaust is what sold me on the bike (the lower price didn't hurt either). It was eactly what I was looking for. My preferred rides tend be 6+ hours so a more comfortable "Sportbike" was my goal and this bike met that perfectly. Summer of 07, I had a Buell XB12SCG (cool bike, but twitchy steering and vibration of the HD engine had we swap to a Yamaha FZ1 for the remainder of the season which was an awesome bike). I got the bug again this year and the FZ6R caught my eye. The bike has been a pleasure to ride from day one. If you're looking for a cutting edge sport bike, the full blown R6 would be your bike, but if you're an average rider (like me) looking for a nice sportbike that's a blast to ride for the other 95% of your street riding, the FZ6R might be your ticket. I've been very pleased with the FZ6R to date.
