The XC90 on a whole has a serious tire wear problem and Volvo has done nothing about it- in fact its Dangerous!- My 2004 XC90 car is perfectly balanced and alligned and we are on our third set of tires at 41,000 Miles!!!!!!- Average cost of $1200.00 for 4 tires. Only 2 tire companies- Michelin and Pirelli make tires for the 18 inch rim. Average life expectancy 15,000 miles!!!!!!! The tire cost alone makes this car a clear don't buy- huck of shit.

I had an early tire wear problem on my XC90. My dealer contacted Perelli and they replaced the tires at no charge.

I have a 2006 XC90 with 27,000 miles. The perelli's were changed at 19,000 and now the wheel bearings are gone. I thought this was the "car for life" and we were happy to finally be able to step up in quality. We'll have to tough it out until it is paid off but I most likely will NOT buy this car again and trade it sooner then expected.

Tire wear

What most are missing is the weight of the XC90, it is much heavier than most cars its size. Why? Safety features are a large part of this. It is a compromise.

2004 v70 - we've been having water leakage problems also- dealer claimed drainage was clogged from debris couldn't find source of leak. at least twice again found water in front passenger floor and soaked in front roof interior near the handles. If the dealer doesn't fix this problem once and for all a class action lawsuit sounds like a good idea.

Bridgestone/Firestone now makes the Dueler H/T in a 235/60/18 for the XC90 T6. They're about $180/tire, have an H rating and a 60,000 mile warranty. Pirelli knows that their tires are wearing an average of 15-19K miles and doesn't see that as a problem since they are a V rated (performance) tire. Take control and buy a different brand and don't fund their lack of quality.

Love my XC90
|
Bought a certified used 2005 XC90 T6. Certification meant all tires were replaced, they put a Goodyear tire on it. I've noticed wear but we've had the car a year now and have driven nearly 16k miles in that year, with more than half the tread still on the tires. I notice very even wear across all four tires. I expect to get about 25k more miles out of these tires, which puts these tires in a decent range. Dealer did tell me on my XC70 AWD that all four tires should be replaced together so as to not damage the AWD mechanics. The XC90 has been very trouble free, we've loved everything in the car (except the factory installed Rear Entertainment System has some quirks). Our only maintenance cost so far has been the scheduled maintenance events but our dealer has given multiple and generous discounts to us. I'm a very happy Volvo owner, ever since I had my first 740GL in 1989!

I have a '04 XC90 (purchased in Aug of 2003 in Burlingame, Ca.). I've finally reached 40k miles. Thus far, I have replaced all four tires THREE times and all brakes THREE times.
Although I love this car (my husband hates it and threatens to sell it every time we're driving in it) it is the biggest money pit out there.
I will never buy a Volvo again. I'm planning on the new BMW X6 - which should be out in a year or two. By then I will have put another set of brakes and tires on my car for sure.
I too had the problems with the water leaking. My keys keep breaking. They are not covered by warranty -$450 a pop. Ouch.

I have 59,000 Miles on a 2003 XC-90 T-6. Third set of tires wearing excessively!! The car has gone through Original Michelins, Pirrelli Scorpions and now Goodyear Response edge. I now need a 4th set with 59,000 on vehicle!!! Car has and has been properly alligned and proper tire inflation. This car has a problem and Volvo and the tire manufactures know it!! They can argue that this is the nature of a v rated tire. They're full of shit- a daily driven Dodge Viper burning rubber at every start would have longer tread life. Don't count on the response edge warranty either. I'll never buy another Volvo and I'm trading this car in next week. I should have torched this car after it ate through the Michelins at 15,000 miles!!!!!!!!!

I have the 2005 XC90. The entire time I have had the car, the dealer made me feel like I drove the breaks too much! I aM AT 46,000 miles and I just replaced all 4 tires for the 3rd time! My car completely stopped running for about an hour the other day. I called AAA and when they came, the car started again. My gas tank door has broke many times and for the third time my driver window goes up and down and wont stop at the up position. I also only get 265 miles for a full tank of gas and my friend gets 365. What do you get? tjo wrote: What a shock! I've just come back from the tire store after paying $200 to replace a damaged tire on my 2005 XC90 which has 14,000 miles. I damaged the sidewall of the tire so had to replace it and found out that the Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires that come with the SUV are "performance" tires and do not come with any warranty at all. Also found out that the other front tire tread is so worn that the tire store would not rotate it to the back! I have no complaint about having to replace the tire because it was my fault, but getting no warranty for an expensive tire AND getting less than 20,000 miles on the existing tires is causing my head to start adding up the $$$ that i'm going to spend over the life of my XC90. I hesitated when buying it due to the cost, but talked myself into doing it by reasoning that I'm going to keep it for at least 10-12 yrs. After what happened today i'm figuring it's going to cost me an additional $8,000 -$9,000 just in tires alone over those years. I wouldn't have bought this XC90 if had known ahead of time. Prior to the XC90 I owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee which used "light truck" tires (= cheaper) and got quite a few good miles out of them, PLUS I got some credit on the used tires when bought new ones. I wouldn't be complaining half as much if I had gotten some "performance" out of these tires. There is nothing special about them, and they're also noisy in my opinion. >>> Anyone out there feel the same way? >>> Anyone has similar experience w/ Acura MDX? i'm already regretting not buying the MDX instead, and thinking about trading in my XC90 for it (out the window with my reason for buying the XC90). I'm going to do some searching, but right now am too upset... I know I'm a practical person, but are my expectations unreasonable??? Oh well, i feel a little better now being able to vent.

What makes me so upset is that the Volvo dealership acts like you are the only one having these issues and says they haven't had any other complaints about the tires and brakes. They say it must be "the way I drive" that causes so much wear. I have had 2 Ford Explorers, a Lincoln Navigator and a Honda Accord that I would love to have back. All of them have been better vehicles in every way compared to my piece of shit XC90. This is what I would call one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made.

I forgot to mention that a few weeks ago the key started sticking in the ignition when you try to turn off the car. The key will not come out and the door will not lock with the key in the ignition so you have to leave your keys in the ignition in an unlocked car. I keep hoping someone will steal it but unfortunately, when i come out of the store/work the damn thing is still there......no one wants it!

stuart wrote: Same story in the UK - I've just replaced two front tyres on my XC90 after only 12,500 miles and I used to get 20 t0 25 thousand from my last 4 x 4, a Toyota Land Cruiser. Seriously considering changing to the new model Grand Cherokee which seems to have solved all its previous poor ride and roadholding probs. A lot more powerful too !! Got 20,000 on my front Continentals with XC90 diesel. Do you check the pressures every week and take it easy around corners? And power is the problem with all 4x4. The are very heavy.

Good going Debbie. But then you take great care of your shoes. I use Continentals and care for them but only get 20,000 as our roads in the UK are poor and mainly gridlocked. Was in Cookville, TN last fall. Loved your roads and courteous drivers. Back again in 2010 I hope

I have an 03 Xc9o that needs new tires every 20,000 miles. Is there another type of tire other than the V- rated Michelins that last longer but still handle decetnly without too much noise?

Added to the list of dissatisfied customers...this is my 3rd Volvo, so I am not used to cheap tires, BUT the rear tires on my XC90 completely burnt up in a matter of 3,000 miles. No...I am not a road warrior. I commute 10 miles a day back and forth to work.
The volvo dealer says that it is an alignment problem, but I find that hard to believe since the excessive wear is only on my rear tires.
Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

I had to replace my '05 XC90 tires at 24000 (the original Pirelli) because they were totally worn. I am one of the easiest drivers out there - no fast starts or stops, all my other cars had tires longer than I owned the car. But these wore out and were replace by Pirelli for a nominal fee. I'm at 55k miles now and looking for my 3rd set of tires. I will not get Pirelli again, that much is sure.
