1999 Beetle - loud screeching sound on start up. Ceases immediately after start. Sounds like typical belt squeel but none of the following has solved the problem - replaced belt, replaced belt tensioner, replaced starter.
Mine to! I was told it was my a/c compressor starting to die, and the belt skipping on the stalled a/c tensioner...

I have a 2005 VW bug that is having transmission problems.
The issue has been documented by numerous owners and VW will not stand by the product.
The car only has 77,000 miles on it and will cost me $1600 to fix and then I will need a new transmission soon.
VW says that they will give me $750 towards a new car.
I am unable to drive the car now as the hesistation in the shifting is really dangerousa and the car slips into neutral and just whines.
Any suggestions?

VW knew and continues to know about this issue.
They extended the warranty which is now over.
My car has only 77,000 miles on it and I feel that VW should fix an issue that they have known about for years. This should have been a recall.
If you follow the blogs there are numerous people in the same boat.

I would be OK with the repair if this was NOT a major issue with VW and numerous cars in that time period.

Dear All,
I have a problem with a 2000 Beetle.
Main beam headlights work but when I switch to dip "NOTHING" all fuses OK and power is there too, is this a relay or a dipswitch poblem?
And were is the relay on a UK car?

Many thanks

Julie my 2000 VW is doing the same thing. I replaced the thermostat, today and it did not fix it so I am afraid it is the water pump.
i just got a 2001 VW Beetle GLX and im having some problems like that... it over heats (i have a scanner plugged and it said that my coolant temp went up to 290 f... so my temp sender isn't working right) and after im low on coolant (and thats like $25 from the dealer)... it also makes a sound like there is a electric motor just spinning when i open the hood... the thing is is there is no loss of power in my little turbo car. the dealer said it may be the temp sender, but if it was why is the coolant low all the time? if its something like that i can fix it... but what could it be other then the temp sender (im going to fix that already... thanks

2003 beetle. Car won't turn over. Makes clicking sound. Replaced alternator. Didn't solve problem. Replaced starter. Didn't solve problem. Took it to dealer. The dealer replaced the Instrument Cluster. The car started fine for 4 days. Now it will turn over, but only if the gas pedal is depressed for at least 3 minutes.
Help!! No idea what's wrong with it! I've dumped almost $1200 into it so far....

I'm having the same problem on my 2001 NB. Your problem is the fuse box on top of the battery. Don't get too excited, I have changed this part on my car 3x already. I feel ya on NEEDING the AC I'm LA. Good Luck!!
My '99 did the same thing. I was riding around in LA as well. Very hot. I tried the can of freon as well. It continued working while I was riding along but would blow warm air when stopped. I had the system drained then refilled with new freon and it has worked like a champ since. Have been through a Texas summer since having it serviced and have had no issues.

I have a 99 VW Beetle & have had tons of issues all at once. It started to overheat & run out of antifreeze. Make a long story short....after 500.00 to a guy that was suppose to fix it...my car is doing the same thing. Antifreeze justs runs right out of it. On my way home today, my coolant light started flashing & thick, white smoke was pouring out of my tail pipe & under my hood. Does anyone know what could maybe be wrong?

My 2000 volkswagen beetle 2.0 is having trouble starting when it's cold outside. When it's warm outside it starts fine. What could be the problem?

Have the brake light switch replaced. Mine did the same thing...came on intermittently...then I noticed my brake lights weren't working! Local HONEST mechanic ordered a new brake light switch, replaced it, and now it works fine. No more EPC light. There was a recall on the brake light switch, but I bought my beetle used...so had to find out from research. Hope this helps.
