The RED LIGHT low oil pressure comes on.
The dash board display flashes STOP.
1. The engines full of clean oil at the right level.
2. The oil pressure test OK with a gauge.
3. The engine was then flushed and refilled.
4. The oil pressure switch was replaced with new.
The RED LIGHT and the STOP now are still displayed.
Anyone with any clues?

Just found out,
Disconnect the oil pressure switch
Connect the cable to ground.
Drive away , all appears normal.
Pretty scary that you'd have to believe that the engine definitely has no oil pressure!!!

I am having this problem too. Are you saying to disconnect the oil pressure switch permanently?

Engine appears to be running fine, I was told the pressure was good as well.

you might have suffered an oil 'sludge' condition that is well known in the US, VW/Audi have given an unlimited mileage engine warranty to 1997-2004 model year vehicles using the 1.8t engine in the US.
Common signs are intermittent oil light indication then noisy engine/turbo. The oil pick up tube gauze filter becomes blocked with carbon/sludge thereby giving reduced oil supply to the engine internals. Generally perceived to be the turbo overheating the oil and causing this residue.
Interestingly in US this engine has a 5000m oil change schedule using only fully synthetic oil.
Oil pump is located within sump and can be changed without engine removal.
Not much good news for you but good luck.

I bought a used VW Passat 1.8 T 3 yrs back. The dealer scheduled a checkup with vw dealers, They checked and ok the car. Now since then 32 time the MIL light has turened on, showing the 4th engine is misfiring and a coil need to be replaced. Did that, then the emchanic told me that the oil which the precision tunes were putting in is wrong and it has triggered the RED OIL PRESSURE ENGINE LIGHT and STOP sign coming on all of a sudden while driving. Though no engine sounds, so got the oil changed, clean the whole system as it was coagualting in there. 2 days later, light comes on again, was told the sensor need to be changed as these sensors are bad in VW & AUDI both. Changed the sensor today and not even driving for a min, and the light came on again, with STOP sign on, and blinking oil sign..... Does anyone know whats going on? Haveto take the car back to the shop in an hour.

Hi i am andy roberts roberts motors having the same problem. Pressure from pump directly 180 psi. When through the filter to crank 65 psi at first, then the more the engine runs the more the pressure drops till its down to 30 then 20 psi then we switch off engine.Still investigating it but sounds like strainer blockced.Don't kid yourself its the switch this engines cam picked up from lack of oil and broke the cam gear.Any thoughts give me a ring 01753859140

It's due to sludge in the pickup tube. Check pickup tube and if it is clogged, then put new tube and oil pump in. while you are there, check the main bearings for being burnt. Don't just ground out the sensor. What happens if you really do have low pressure, then how would you know?

Mike, do you know if VW offer this same extended warranty to UK customers. My 2003 1.8T looks like it's just developed the same problem.
Thanks

I had the same "sludge"/oil pressure problem with my 2003 1.8T. Major engine damage was caused even though the warning came on and the car was stoped immidiatly. Thankfully Audi US covered the damage and put a new engine in the car.

this is exactly what i just went through on last week. after taking my car to the mechanic i was told that i have oil sludge built up in my engine and it will cost in the thousands to take care of this problem this also does not guarantee that it will fix the problem.

It's a known problem that is being hushed up by VW

Does anyone have problems with removing the ignition coils on 2006 vw passat 1.6 fsi, I tried to remove 1 (gently) but it broke in half. I was wondering is this a problem with this model as i have removed them on other vw with no problems.

2003 passat 1.8t had simmilar problem, light came on "stop engine low oil pressure" mechanic thought it was the oil preasure switch, charged me $115 to replace then on way home it happend again. Went back and they called VW to find out about oil sludge problem. Mechanic then removed oil pan and replaced the clogged pick up tube and cleaned the bottom end and pan out. cost $360.00 Seems ok so far, only 40 miles though.

I'm running into the same issue and would like to know if this is a "real" fix.
Thanks.

Just had this happen on my 2002 Audi A4 1.8t. Officially Audi UK do NOT recognise this problem. Audi US do? Typical.

I have just repaired a 97 18T passat engine with the same problem. Theturbo engine has a ridiculously small oil pump inlet screen, 1 inch in diameter. Any sign of any sludge or rubbish in the sump is sucked up and blocks the screen. Only need small amount to block screen, starve the pump and bring on the light. VW knows about the problem because they sell an upgraded pump inlet screen assembly for $700. I fixed the problem by cutting off the screen and welding a larger screen onto the pipe with a much larger inlet area. A small amount of sludge is now not going to affect the function of the pump. Problem has now gone away.
