so...is it true that it's going to take about $1200 to make the light go out??!! 130K miles, had the throttle body cleaned 40K miles ago. Runs rough when cold, surges when at a stop; pings and yet the milage is still running 24/31 mpg.

Thanks to all who are interested!

Is it normal for the "emissions" check engine light to come on arround 110,000 miles on my 2001 VW Passat ? Is there some usual service needed now concerning emmissions?

Good luck with that check engine light. Mine turned on twice. Of course, when I take into the shop, the sensor is out and a myriad of other things is wrong, so I walk out paying $3500 total. NOW, my transmission has failed.$6500 to repair. Not doing it. How much money will this heap of junk get me for scrap metal?

my 2001 passat wagon GLS check engine light came on a while back. I had Autozone read the code which provided several things to check. Oxygen sensor, spark plugs, ignition coils. It turned out to be none of the above. Checking the engine bay closely, I saw one of the small thin black vacuum hose was dangling and not connected due to aging. I replaced it and reset the code by disconnecting the battery cable for 5 minutes. After the code reset the Engine Light went away. Check to make sure all the vacuum hose are connected and not loose.

It seems everything from the front bumper to the rear one has some connection to that light. On the advice of a friend, run some good injector cleaner in the gas for a few tanks and then disconnect the battery for about five minutes to erease the computer memory. When you reconnect you may find the light is no longer on. Worked for me!

You need to change the mass air flow sensor

Look bro check engine light will allways go on as long as you drive the passat. Go to Autozone etc... They'll check it for free and try to erase it. You can erase most of them but certain malfunction need repair. Condider yourself lucky your passat made it this far. I know plenty that last only 40-60 thousands miles.

Drop oil pan few bolts clean the pipe that suck up the oil to pump. Before try doing engine flush. Use the best and heavy oil available synthetic. You can do it yourself.
Is it leak water ( water sitting in there) or is it leaking water. If leaching water from engine could be bad water pump or it's gasket. If water just seating there than its just an antifree or water that got collected in there next to spark plugs do to engine form design. It usually smokes fooling you that it's a leak exhaust.

I have a 01 passat 1.8turbo with 148K miles. Check engine light came on. shop said it was thermostat sensor, code read out 0118. Guy replaced one sensor for 200 bucks, but light still came on. replaced second sensor that he said relates to same code. Said he told me he recommended at time of service, but he never did. To cover himself only charged me 25bucks labor and part was 25 so for $50 bucks I said ok. I day later light is back on. Now he said he might have put in wrong sensor because there were two to chose from. What a headache.

Well Chris for your check engine light there are 3 sensors are bad P0430, P0130(upper) and P0150 (lower) are your oxygen sensors which cost $135 for one @ Autozone buy the exact fit one not the universal one. If you have a side garage friend who could replace it for less than $1200 if he knows how or you could do it youeself because the exact fit ispull out and replace same way it is not rocket science. P0430 is a catalyst sensor which cost a little more.

my 2000 passat check engine/emissions lite has been on for 3 years, car runs great, took to aamco and severl codes came up, p1557, p0441, p1136, any clues, my mechanice says its likely 02 sensor, he says lite will continue to come on. its annoying i have had lots of work done in past year, knew lite would still come on. whats up with this, my comments above sounds like my mechanic is right and he says i should ignore.
