so...is it true that it's going to take about $1200 to make the light go out??!! 130K miles, had the throttle body cleaned 40K miles ago. Runs rough when cold, surges when at a stop; pings and yet the milage is still running 24/31 mpg.

Thanks to all who are interested!

Is it normal for the "emissions" check engine light to come on arround 110,000 miles on my 2001 VW Passat ? Is there some usual service needed now concerning emmissions?

I have the same issue. I just bought a 2001 Passat V6 wagon. I got the car with 84000 Miles, and now at 90000 Mile the Check engine light came on and i have no clue what could be the cause. Help!!!!!

Good luck with that check engine light. Mine turned on twice. Of course, when I take into the shop, the sensor is out and a myriad of other things is wrong, so I walk out paying $3500 total. NOW, my transmission has failed.$6500 to repair. Not doing it. How much money will this heap of junk get me for scrap metal?

my 2001 passat wagon GLS check engine light came on a while back. I had Autozone read the code which provided several things to check. Oxygen sensor, spark plugs, ignition coils. It turned out to be none of the above. Checking the engine bay closely, I saw one of the small thin black vacuum hose was dangling and not connected due to aging. I replaced it and reset the code by disconnecting the battery cable for 5 minutes. After the code reset the Engine Light went away. Check to make sure all the vacuum hose are connected and not loose.
