I have the same problem, no speed signal (Tach OK) I found an instrument cluster at a junkyard and now it works fine but very high mileage on it, of course kept it in but if I ever sell my car I guess I'll change it back.
hi i want to know what mpg you get before and after changing this electronic cluster for your 98 vw jetta. I dont see why changing such a part would have an effect on MPG!

thanks

can u reply also to rpuigdel at gmail dot com? thanks again!

97 VW Golf error code po501 vss/ speed sensor. Speedometer works intermittently. Usually doesn't work. Have someone that will do labor for free, just gotta pay for part. I am finding four different speed sensors, front drivers side, passenger side, rear drivers side, and passenger side. How do I find out which part is the culprit? All other meters work, except the dash light which could probably be a fuse.
i suspect you are looking at the wrong sensors . they are the abs brake system sensors . what you need is "speed pulse generator"
it is located on top of the (manual)? transmission.

I also have this problem in my 95 Jetta where every gauge drops dead in sync and at random times. Also I have zero illumination except for the mileage indicator and clock. Sometimes tapping on the glass in front of the gauges will activate them. I too will try out a new wiring harness and post the results

Its the cluster they are known for failing replacing the whole cluster will be the only way to fix it. Changed mine on my golf 2 times.

I have had a failed tachometer and speedometer for a year or so now. I have been working on the problem, and finally devised a very simple (if not crude) fix. You can see how I did it at my web site. I installed stops on the dial face. This is very crude I know, but it works very well. Here is the link for more details: http://www.design1ng.com/projects/jettacluste...

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. mark(at) design1ng.com

I have 2002 VW Jetta TDI Diesel, and get some problems with the fuel and temp (not working at all). gauges. After checking the wiring diagram of the cluster I found there is a signal coming to the cluster from the fuel level sending unit and ECT sensor. On the other hand I tried to detect any error code in the cluster unit by using Snap-On scanner and it gives me 2 error codes related to fuel and ECT sensor. Then I did an instrument cluster test (an option in the scanner) and shows all the gauges move smooth and normal. Any one can explain me the problem? Could be bad solder contact inside the cluster itself?

Hi one of my friends is having the same problem. He never lets his car warm up before heading to work or the gym etc. and he has a 98 jetta. his needle on the speedometer just started acting up. Could it be that he needs to warm the engine up before he starts to drive? Or could this mean he has to replace the steeper motor?
Also if anyone is experienced with tuning and upgrading cars can I get some feedback on some good mods for a 98 jetta gt 5-speed?

I am flabbergasted by "German Engineering" Fragile material and design. Overly complicated built in obsolescence at best. VW's best, not ours. Anyone who knows VW and has had the experience needs their head examined if you buy another VW. VW must be some kind of revenge for WWII. It took me 6 VWs before I went for professional help.
