I purchased my 2007 Camry at Down East Toyota of Brewer, Maine on Saturday, June 2nd. I traded my 2005 buick LaCrosse with 22,500 miles.
By Monday, June 4th, I began to experience a dangerous hesitation/downshifting problem. I immediately called the Down East Toyota service department and told them of problems I was experiencing.
The person I spoke with related to me that this is a common complaint with that model Camry, and that I should drive the car for at least one week in order for the car to 'learn' my driving habits. I followed his advice exactly, and at end of week with no change I called Down East Toyota service department again.
This time the person on the phone told me that the hesitation/downshifting problem is at this time normal but not to worry because apparently the v6 Camrys had to be pulled from the lot for transmission problems. He stated that when and if Toyota comes up with a fix they will let me know. I asked about what I had been told the week before about driving car for a week person on phone
laughed and said it was true that the car will learn driving habits but that this will not help with the hesitation/downshifting problems I was experiencing.
I asked several more questions about problem and was told to talk to salesman who sold me the car, see what he can do. I called my salesman and asked him of complaints I was having he told me to come in and drive another 2007 to see it does same thing. I said no thank you but I will come in and get my 2005 buick lacrosse back, he said no problem.
After work I went to the Down East Toyota dealership and, to my surprise, my old car was sitting there in front row waiting for me. I was never so glad to see that LaCrosse. My salesman greeted me at door and said it was funny, the Saturday I purchased my Camry he sold three altogether, and two have already come back.
I didnt think it was funny at all.
At the paperwork signing I found I would be losing the $5000 cash I had put down on the Camry, and will owe $2000 more on the Buick than I did 9 days ago when I traded it in on the Camry. At the time I was told there was no fix for the Camry. Just that morning as I was pulling into traffic car hesitated and jumped forward violently, almost hitting a UPS truck. I felt like I had no choice but to trade the vehicle in or I would be stuck with it as the salesman claimed.
Several days later I wanted someone at Down East Toyota to explain why I lost so much money on the transaction. I called to talk to their customer relations person and was told they were on vacation, and left a message for that person to call me back. Weeks later and still no call, so I called back and left another message. Fast forward to September (yes, three months later) I called again asking to leave a voice message for their customer relations person.
To my surprise Kevin Kelly called me back, I asked him about why I lost so much money for a problem that Toyota admits to. Kevin Kelly called me a liar and said no one at Toyota would tell me that there is a problem with this Camry, and he said he can do as he wishes and there is nothing you can do, because he did not hold a gun to my head to buy the camry or to trade it back in.
I have discovered that he is right, there is nothing i can do, other than simply live and learn. I should have done what my heart was telling me to do on the third day, and bring car back, stopping payment on the down payment check and get my old car back. I was afraid I would have gone to jail or something.
Down East Toyota qualifies as the RIP OFF ARTISTS of the YEAR.

Toyotas letter for Hesitation. its kinda funny that toyota sending out these letters to conserned customers...... I told them the complaints I had about hesitation 3 days of owning the dangerous car!! I was told to drive for a week and that the hesitation will go away...... But three months later Kevin Kelly Tells me the first thing out of his mouth is "who says there is a hesitation problem cause he didnt know of problem" when I said his service department, he suddenly knows of problem and tells me I did not wait long enough for a fix!!

Below is the response I received from the Toyota Corporation when I contacted them via their website:

We apologize for the concerns you are having regarding your 2007 Camry's driving response.
We appreciate the opportunity to address your concern.
After starting the engine, we recommend 30 seconds of engine idle, after which we recommend that you start driving slowly until the temperature gauge needle indicates to half the way point.
To accelerate, a strong but gradual gas pedal application is recommended.
The system needs input from various sensors to calculate optimal shift points to achieve optimal fuel economy, emissions, and performance.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
The warranty coverage for the transmission is five years / 60,000 miles, whichever comes first from the vehicles date of first use. Warranty coverage is determined by a Toyota dealership's hands-on inspection of the vehicle to determine cause, condition and remedy.
ITS Funny MR KEVIN KELLY, THOUSANDS OF HESITATION COMPLAINTS on the internet but you are not aware of this DANGEROUS problem?? MAYBE MORE TOYOTA SCHOOLING???

All the 1800 Toyotas call center can say is : SORRY ABOUT YOUR CONCERNES: We know of the problem, We know toyota is trying everything to fix it. We are sorry you almost hit a ups truck!! What a JOKE TOYOTA IS!!!!
MR KEVIN KELLY AND DOWNEAST TOYOTA Takes Advantage of you when they know you had several close calls with a known dangerous vehicle, and because no one has died yet nothing can be done about the dangerous problem! When trading a dangerous vehicle back in 10 days after purchase, Buying the car back you traded in 10 days earlier, and the consumer loses 7000.00, and I will use Kevin Kellys Words " Because we can an nothing you can do about it". I see now why almost every Vehicle add, commercial talks about lies,scams, and what the dealer does not want you to know!! This dealership is best at what they DO!!! will be posting the paperwork of said "DEAL" for all to see that I did infact lose 7000.00.
Stay away from this dealership, No matter what they are giving away this week!!!!!!

Description of the Complaint:
My wife and I purchased a 2007 camry le, 4-cylinder, 5-speed automatic with 7,700 miles from down east toyota in brewer, maine. Ever since our test drive we've experienced lack of acceleration (hesitation) from a stop or after slowing down to turn or proceed, shifting problems (constant up and down shifting at certain speeds; car not sure which gear to be in and feels like the car is surging) and unable to use the cruise control due accelerating too quickly due to downshifting and then overshooting the set speed. Some of these symptoms are sporadic; you never know if the car is going to move or not when stepping down hard and quickly on the gas pedal. Sometimes it "red-lines" before accelerating, other times there is barely any response at all. So far have only driven on bare dry/wet roads. We are not looking forward to driving it on snow and ice. We were told by det after the test drive and toyota corporation that this is normal performance for this vehicle, even though there are TSBs (technical service bulletins) concerning these problems. Eg036-07 is the latest ecm update, which was done on 08/14/07 without any noticeable improvements. We would never have purchased this vehicle if we had only researched the car beforehand on the internet. This car is unsafe to drive and toyota and det will be held responsible if an accident occurs due to the aforementioned problems.
