Complaint - Electrical System, Electronic Stability Control, Steering
WE LEASED A 2013 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE ON FRIDAY MARCH 29TH, 2013 AT 9:00 PM. FROM MANHATTAN BEACH TOYOTA IN MANHATTAN BEACH CALIFORNIA. THE VERY NEXT DAY, SATURDAY MARCH 30TH, 2013 WHILE DRIVING NORTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 99 NEAR BAKERSFIELD AT 65 MILES PER HOUR TO LINDSAY CALIFORNIA FROM INGLEWOOD CALIFORNIA, I HEARD A "DING" SOUND AND I FELT THE STEERING WHEEL STIFFEN UP. I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY HOLD ON TIGHTLY TO THE STEERING WHEEL TO TRY AND KEEP CONTROL OF THE CAR. I THEN NOTICED ALL OF THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS HAD TURNED ON. I ALSO NOTICED THAT ALL OF THE GAUGES WERE NO LONGER FUNCTIONING. MY WIFE AND I WERE VERY TERRIFIED AS WE IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF THAT POOR FAMILY THAT LOST THEIR LIVES DURING A TOYOTA MALFUNCTION. AS I TRIED TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE CAR, LOOKING FOR AN EXIT OFF THE HIGHWAY, I REALIZED THAT THE POWER STEERING WAS NO LONGER WORKING. THE CAR WAS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER, BUT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY AND TAKE THE CAR TO BILL WRIGHT TOYOTA NEARBY. THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIX THE CAR THAT DAY AND I HAD TO LEAVE IT THERE. THE CAR WAS IN THEIR POSSESSION FOR 6 DAYS AS I WAS TOLD THAT A TOYOTA ENGINEER NEEDED TO GO TO BAKERSFIELD AND FIX THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA HAD TO REPLACE THE WHOLE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT

VEHICLE IS OK AT APPROXIMATELY <50MPH BUT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IT REQUIRES 100% CONCENTRATION TO NOT VEER OUT OF THE DRIVING LANE. IT WANDERS ALL OVER THE ROAD ON ITS OWN. IT BEHAVES LIKE YOU ARE DRIVING IN A SEVERE CROSS WIND THOUGH THERE IS NO WIND PRESENT. MANY SUCH COMPLAINTS ALL OVER THE INTERNET. COMPLETELY UNSAFE AND I HAVE FORBIDDEN MY FAMILY FROM DRIVING IT AND AM IN THE PROCESS OF SELLING IT

#4 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The vehicle is a 2012 Toyota Camry. Bought a new 012 Camry. First time on highway noticed excessive amount of play in the steering driving 50mph. I was very surprised on how difficult it is to keep the car driving straight at high speeds. Steering wheel is very loose and eratic. Driving next to a big rig truck I had to focus all my effort (moving my steering wheel left and right) to keep car centered. This is dangerous and the steering feels unstable at high speeds. I hope Toyota can utilize a fix for this ASAP. I will be following up with my local dealer on my concerns. It was Mar. 1, 2013 when this steering issue occurred.

#6 - Steering problem of the 2013 Toyota Camry
The car was a 2013 Toyota Camry. The VIN of this vehicle was 4T1BF1FK3D_. I bought this new Camry and drove it off the lot, it seems fine at lower speeds. When you get up to highway speeds or freeway speeds the car always seems to wonder from side to side. You constantly have to make corrections with the wheel. If you take your eyes off the road for a second you can very easily wind up in the oncoming lane of a two way highway. I thought it might be just me, so I had several other people drive it and they experienced the same thing. The steering is a real safety hazard. Besides this one problem, I realy like this car. This steering problem happened on Apr. 6, 2013.

#7 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The car involved is a 2012 Toyota Camry. The car had a crash. The VIN of the problem Camry is 4T1BF1FK8C_. The vehicle had been steering eradically and pulling to the left primarily. It feels as though the wind is buffeting the vehicle and it is difficult to maintain a steady course. When family have driven behind me it has been noted that the vehicle is all over the road. I was to take the vehicle to the shop for routine maintenance and to have the problem checked out this week but I had an accident. The car pulled to the left and I struck an oncoming vehicle. The day was cloudy but dry. There were no extenuating circumstances. Both cars were totaled. I struck the vehicle left head light to my left head light. The other driver and I were both hospitalized for injuries. We are fortunate not to have been killed. I received a ticket for failure to maintain lane and will go to court in June. This is a dangerous vehicle and I would like to see something done before someone is killed. This problem occurred on Apr. 3, 2013.

#13 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The vehicle involved is a 2012 Toyota Camry. The VIN of this Camry is 4T1BF1FK9C_. Steering lacks on-center feel and this is particularly noticeable at highway speed. Car wanders/darts left and right requiring constant corrective steering to keep car on course. This could be dangerous because even momentary lack of attention to the problem can cause the car to change direction significantly. This steering problem happened on 12/12/2012.

#14 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The vehicle having this issue was a 2012 Toyota Camry. The car is very difficult to keep in a straight line, particularly at 70 mph and when driving in the passing lane on the open highway. I must correct my steering constantly, to keep the car from trying to go left. If you look away for just a moment, you will find yourself bearing left without even thinking about it. My dealer has been fully cooperating so far, but there have not been any correction of the problem. I have taken test drives with their service people, and even had the Toyota factory service rep drive the car with me. He ordered the tow in to be adjusted and the tires rotated. Had that done a few days ago and now the car constantly needs pressure on the wheel, toward the right, to keep it going straight down the road. It is most noticeable while you are in the passing lane at 70 mph. Yesterday I made a trip to a city about 90 miles away. Coming home I was in the left lane most of the time. I ended up with a really bad cramp in my left arm from holding constant right pressure on the wheel for about an hour. You don't dare look anywhere but straight ahead as you must constantly keep the steering corrected to stay in your lane. I believe this is a real safety issues as your total attention must be given to keeping the car in a straight line. If you are distracted, for even a moment, or look to either side you end up quickly driving out of your lane. Not a good thing, particularly in heavy traffic at 70 mph! in the mean time, there appear to be many of us out there having this same drive-ability problem, and there is not yet any solution from Toyota that can be applied. I encourage other with this same problem to keep pursuing Toyota for a solution. This is the first year for their electric steering assist, and it really does need to have something done to alleviate this very unsafe driving condition. This issue happened on Saturday, October 27, 2012.

#17 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The vehicle is a 2012 Toyota Camry. The VIN of the car is 4T1BF1FK9C_. My 2012 Toyota camery se limited edition wanders all of the time. The car never tracks straight. Also none of the nose body lines match. I have brought back the car to the dealer, tarbox Toyota, ri, and was told that the car was test driven. Also that the car was in spec. Although I was never presented with any documented paperwork. As for the bodylines I was told that this wasn't a bently. That none of the bodylines on any car match. I feel as though I was brushed off. This steering issue occurred Oct. 5, 2012.

#19 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The car involved was a 2012 Toyota Camry. I went to pick up my vehicle on September 3, 2012. On the way I found the vehicle was rigid and the suspension was not working properly. When car hit various imperfections in the road there was a banging noise and the car would vibrate. I felt dizzy as during my time spent driving car. The car seems unsafe to use. This should not occur on a vehicle that cost $31k and on the first day that I am driving vehicle. In addition the steering felt more weighted on the left as opposed to the right. When I turned left there was greater resistance. I contacted the customer relations manager that same day and he indicated he felt it maybe a tire pressure problem. He then stated that I should bring the car in for service department to see what the issue is. I later discovered that the radio sound fluctuated. I had contacted the service department to confirm my appointment and discovered that an appointment was never made. I notified Toyota main office and they provided me with a case # 1209050107. The main office at Toyota indicated that they would contact the customer relations manager. I will be going to advantage Toyota in valley stream, NY on 9/8/12. Please have someone investigate the issue regarding the suspension on these vehicles. I don't want someone else to incur the same issues I have. This issue happened on 09/03/2012.

Hate to tell you this, but Toyota's main office is a CALL CENTER and the case # is just the number of complaints before you!! so you are # 120950107 Good luck...... Toyota is a JOKE!!!

#21 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The vehicle was a 2012 Toyota Camry. The VIN of this vehicle is 4T4BF1FK5C_. Steering is vague and not predictable. Never had a car with elec. Steering. Car follows its own course. It takes a lot of attentions to keep it on the road. I think its something to check out. Did not go to the dealer yet. During a test drive at the dealer, they did confirm there was a problem. However, there was no remedy to fit it. Updated 08/27/12. It was June 25, 2012 when this steering issue occurred.

#23 - Steering problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry
The vehicle is a 2012 Toyota Camry. My 2012 Camry hybrid steers hard to the left when braking when the road is crowned along the passenger side of the vehicle. I have taken it in for repair three times since I purchased it in December. First two times the dealer said that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and that Toyota hadn’t registered similar complaints from other owners. The most recent visit to the dealer had a different result. On may 18th the dealer acknowledge that there was a problem with the regenerative braking system and that Toyota was aware of the problem. The dealer opened an investigation with Toyota and Toyota admitted that other owners are having similar problems with their 2012 tch. Toyota and the dealer have no solutions. The vehicle is unsafe and no solutions exist. This steering issue occurred Friday, February 3, 2012

#24 - Steering problem of the 2011 Toyota Camry
The car involved is a 2011 Toyota Camry. Ever since I bought the car (4 cyl., xle) a year ago: automatic transmission shifts sometimes slowly after a pause or unexpectedly and abruptly as it searches for gears, and it races intermittently, especially at start-up; it coasts a few inches after I put it into park, even on level ground. Power steering requires constant correction, even on level road surfaces. Cruise control is slow to respond to adjustments from lever on stem. Dealer's service dept. Claims, after 4 attempts to diagnose, that the car performs as designed, so my complaint will need to be with the design. This steering issue occurred 04/06/2011.

#25 - Steering problem of the 2011 Toyota Camry
The vehicle was a 2011 Toyota Camry. 1. Defective car was delivered by Toyota & its dealer to me (customer).-------- 2. Car was not tested by Toyota/dealer on tires & vibration/shaking before delivery to customer.--------- 3. When I complained to Toyota, then Toyota found the evidence that tires were defective.--------- 4. Because of defective tires fitted by Toyota & not tested properly by Toyota, damages happened on the overall life span of car - suspension & steering systems.--------- 5. Customer - driving safety was also put on huge risk, as untested car was delivered by Toyota.--------- 6. When I complained to Toyota, then Toyota found the evidence that tires were defective.--------- 7. By having that defect in tires, it is obvious that overall life span of car's suspension, struts & steering system has been reduced, because of running with this vibration & shaking.--------- 8. With this existing defect in car (it was present before delivery & couldn't be fixed by Toyota service dealer for 6-months), customer's comfort & driving experience is totally ruined. Toyota is responsible for this damage to the customer's driving discomfort & the safety risk of customer's life (while driving the shaking & vibrating car).-------- 9. Now, as your supervisor offered "one year" of extended warranty on this car. It shows that Toyota know it very well that car is so much impacted & now has shorten the life span of car (because of these damaged tires & impacted parts in the car) so Toyota is only offering "one year" of extended service to cover up their mistakes / defects in their quality.========= car's shaking (vibrations at both - slow and higher speed),- impacts/damages the life span of steering, suspension and struts,- tires not in balance (wheel balancing was not done by Toyota).======== This steering issue occurred Thursday, November 18, 2010.

#5 - Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry
The vehicle was a 2004 Toyota Camry. There was crash involved with this Toyota Camry. Car started pulling to the right when travelling 65-70 mph, leading to hitting a bridge wall and going down hill after that. Suspension and steering heavily damaged, also damage to the body of car. I have been driving for more than 4 years now and this is the first time that I saw a car behave so strangely. Since Toyota Camry has so many complaints from consumers saying that the car pulls to the left, I am thinking if the car was tampered with before sale, causing it to pull to the right instead of left to keep the complaints at bay.. Also while driving for the 4 months that I had the car I noticed that the steering would turn to the right when ever I braked(I should have reported this at that very moment) unfortunate that I am doing this after been an horrible accident. This issue happened on Wednesday, December 22, 2004.

#5 - Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry
I leased a Toyota Camry xle 2007 model from patt lobb Toyota, mckinney, TX sometime in the last quarter of 2007. I have experienced the problem of sudden acceleration so many times and complained to the dealer three times, first time with in the first week of leasing, and they told it is due to rack and pinion steering which gives me a different feel, second time they blamed on my tires as they don't have enough tread depth and last time they can not replicate the problem. This problem always happened when I accelerate around 60 mph. The failure date was 10/01/07

2013 Toyota Camry & Hybrid Complaints
2013 Toyota Camry complaints posted on the NHTSA web site are below.
Does it seem as if Toyota is unresponsive?
How can you feel comfortable in a vehicle that accelerates suddenly?
Please remember that only 13% of people file complaints so this represents only a small portion of Toyota owners experiencing problems.

What does this do to our insurance rates when Toyota's problems cause accidents and injuries? Airbags that don't deploy?
