Just wondering...do you still own your 2002 Highlander???

I just bought a 2002 highlander 2 weeks ago and since then I have changed the oil (900 miles before it needed it) because of smoke from the tail pipe. I have also had to add a quart in 1 week because it was low. I have found out however that it is the valve seals and NOT sludge that is the problem. Maybe you should have your car checked first before you start thinking the worst like I did after I read all of the petition things on the net each case is different. I do feel sorry for those who have actually had sludge problems. For all of those who grip because Toyota wants all oil change records...It's because of all the others who just want money for any reason that have caused them to be so strict. My husband works for Toyota and it is IN AMERICA WITH AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN BUILDING< PAINTING< AND SWEATING OVER IT!

Hey, Toyta engine fires are not hype I understand everyone want to be loyal to their favorite car manufacturer but when lives are at risk it isn't hype. My son had a brand new (6 months old)Toyota truck and went out to start it the day after Thanksgiving 2007 went back into get his coffee and came back out and the engine compartment was on fire, it was a total loss including catching the front of his house on fire and part of his yard. This vehicle was brand new totally stock and Toyota says not our fault and refuses to take any blame or make it right insureanc covers some of the loss but loss of work, additional$$ for a new vehicle, his yard and valuable in the truck all gone and insurance doesn't cover them.

Did the ins company ever determine the cause of the truck fire?

My son could not get his 02 Camry to turn off in my bro's driveway. His keys were in his hand! I dorve it down the hill to the gas station mechanic who burned his hand and replaced a jammed starter motor the next day. The car was minutes from going up with a full gas tank and taking my bro's house with it.

It seems that you may be unaware of the previous issue Toyota had with engine oil sludge in millions of its vehicles. This condition resulted in engine seizing at very low mileage in the presence of properly maintained vehicles. Toyota stonewalled customers for years. Finally, after outcry from angry Toyota owners, Toyota issued one of its "voluntary programs." Toyota owners went to the internet again because Toyota was not honoring its self-lauded, generous program. Successful class action lawsuits resulted. Even then, Toyota stonewalled customers behind the scene and found reasons to disqualify Toyota owners.

Fast forward to NOW...a new major Toyota vehicle excessive oil consumption class action lawsuit is brewing. Toyota dealerships are telling some Toyota owners that this is due to engine oil sludge. Indeed, it was a symptom so one can deduce that the issue of engine oil sludge in Toyotas was essentially ignored.
