I recently experienced the same ECM problem with my 2001 Rav 4. I was told by Toyota that replacing the ECM in a tune of $800 should correct the problem. But, if the ECM malfunction caused a problem to the transmission, the transmission would cost from $3 - 4,000 to be replaced.

<quoted text> We are having the same problems with our 2001 RAV4. We had the catalitic converter replaced after the check engine light kept coming on. Originally all the dealer did was reset the computer so the light would not come on. Twenty five miles later the light was back on. Now we find out that the computer was bad and this caused the transmission/gears to slip. Our RAV4 has 125,000 miles and is not under warranty. Had we known this several years ago, maybe we wouldn't be paying for a new transmission now. Toyota never informed us of this problem. We found this out today.
Hi!
I just found out that i'm having the same problem as you. Toyota dealership reset the catalitic converter back in '07 and now i'm having major transmission problems. Did Toyota stand behind you in fixing this problem?
Thanks!

I have a 2001 Rav4 and I'm also having problems with the transmission. a few months ago the eng light went on but then went away. I just took it for an est. and I was told that there is a recall on the Rav4 regarding the computer. I'm waiting for someone at the dealer to call be back. Hopefully it's true. If not it going to cost some where around $2,000.00 to repair it. Toyota should have infor us of this problem. I think there should be a class action suit agaist them.

Last year I had to have a new computer AND a new transmission because the faulty computer caused it. It was several thousand dollars. This is after 2 years of reseting the computer and misc. repairs and hundreds of dollars that I was told needed to be done AND the check engine light ALWAYS came back on! I was told there was a recall but I had too many miles. Good Luck.

<quoted text>omg...i'm having the same problem too. but they didn't say anything about it costing 6 grand. they said that to have the computer replaced would be around 800 dollars but nothing like 6 grand. omg. that's so much. let me know what u find out when u take it to the triple a diagnostic.
I took my 2002 Toyota Rav4 for the 601 ECM Reprogram Recall. I was informed that I'm having Transmission problems/Catalytic Converter problems & Computer problems and can be fixed for a little over $6000!!! This matches the cost on a previous posting and I am extremely upset because it seems like Toyota is just trying to make more money off me.

This problems is obviously common. Does anybody know how we can get this under consideration for a recall???

I have a 2001 Rav 4. I had to replace the engine also, after, out of nowhere, the engine went out. The engine overheated with absolutely NO warning Also, every year since I bought it (new), the check engine light has come on, creating problems getting it through emissions testing. While under warranty, dealer fixed the problem, however, I have had to fix the same problem each year since the warranty expired. Currently, my Toyota is needing repairs related to all the same problems I have had since purchase.

I too have become a victim of Toyota's irresponsible handling of their faulty ECM leading to transmission problems leading to failure. I first noticed the problem September 21st where my tranmission would not shift properly between 2nd and 3rd, acted like it was in neutral for a couple seconds. I found out from the internet and the New York Times article that it's widespread and should be recalled before someone gets killed. My dealer denied repairs-Toyota said I had too many miles. My dealer Haywood Allen in Athens wanted $6000 in parts. We must get together for a class action.

Me and my wife have taken Toyota’s floor mat recall today to join and vent our frustrations on every blog and website we can find. Toyota has national media attention today and it’s a good time to embarrass them even more.

I have had my toyota for 5 years and when i 1st bought it the check engine light came on. i took it back and the reset it . a month later it came back on. They replace the catistic convertor for free. NOw just 3 years later its back on. MY father whom worked for toyota for 31 years said its a defect in rave 4's I called the 800 number and got the run around . of coarse they wont fix it. some one should of inform me that it had to be replaced every 3 years when i bought the car. I am thinking of starting a class action suit agaisnt them . now the damn car is slipping out of gear. I only have 5 payments left on the car. dont think i will buy another toyota!!!!!!!!!

This is a complete joke. I have a 2001 Rav 4 and have had the check engine light problem since I got it (Aug. 2001). Unless Toyota recalls and fixes all of these models they should be sued (class action). They are wiling to reprogram the computer (60I ECM reprogram recall in 2007) but they do not fix the problem for good.
Anyone thinking that?

I have the same problem as yours. Bought a RAV4 in 2001. Every year since I bought it, the check engine light has always come on. I can't remember how many times I have had to bring the car in to have them fix the check engine light. Last month, it came on again. Now the speedometer and odometer stop working. The transmission is slipping but still drivable. The car has 104K miles so out of warranty. But i'm so fed up with this car. I did a diagnostic and got a P0500 code, Vehicle Speed Sensor. So I replaced the sensor with a new one. The check engine light is still on. Now I think it has something to do with the ECM ECU. So many people have the same problem as mine. Definitely should have a class action suit against Toyota.

I'm having the same problem, with a 2002 Rav4. Since I have 105,000 miles on it, I'm out of luck. Needs a new computer and maybe a new transmission. Interesting - since I brought the car in, in 2007, to have the computer reprogrammed after it was recalled. Guess that "fix" wasn't much of a fix, was it?
