Hi there -

I live in California and recently got a letter that Toyota rav4 2001 model has been recalled by the Air resources board under the Emissions Recall Program ssc601. Has anyone heard about this? What am I supposed to do now?

Appreciate your comments. Thanks.

We received our CA registration renewal with notice that a "Proof Of Correction Certificate" is required for Recall SSC601. Still no idea what that is about, we had the computer programming and catylitic converter replaced under warranty and/or recall due to the check engine light coming on, but none of the documents mention SSC604 (or anything like it).

we took ours into the local toyota dealer. they ran a test, possibly reset the computer, and gave us a certificate to give to the DMV. no charge.

we've had some issues with check engine light coming on - not sure if this is related, but we hope so.

I have a 2001 Rav 4. Can't wait to get rid of it. I LOVED IT when I bought it. Out of no where, the engine needed to be replaced. Turned out to be: The engine control sensor went out, which did not notify me it was over heated. The day I brought it in, white smoke came out of the tail pipe. It was a lost cause. 79,000 current miles on this Toyota. Getting it fixed, and looking for another Rav. Has this happened to anybody?

there is a guy on ebay that supposedly fixes the computer for $400. i just sent mine. toyota tells you that you need to replace both computer and tranny. replace computer first. may be all you need. if both then tough question since i was told 5K in st. louis and car can't be worth 8K working.good luck

SSC601 - All they did was re-program the ECM and that was it - Free of Charge

Rav4 makes a weird squiky sound when breaking. Sounds like it comes from the rear.... It is not the break but it's been doing this for the last 1 and a half year! We think this is a recall, but I can't find anything on it....

ssc601 is for reprogramming the diagnostic computer so that it has a broader range on the catalitic converter monitor test. so that the computer won't set the code as often. (paramaters too tight)

I have a 2001 RAV4 and have just read several posts regarding problems with the transmission as well as the ECU. According to the blogs, many of the RAV's begin to slip into gears, including mine, and the ECU (transmission computer)does not even indicate any fault. The smell of burning is apparent. Toyota does not want to check the car unless the Engine problem light lights up. The condition of my car worries me as my family and I use the vehicle often.

My vehicle approx. has 100K km. Anyone else experiencing this problem? I live in New Westminster, Canada.

I just changed my ECM on RAV4 2001 that you can find out the same complaint and problem on carcomplaint.com and Toyota will responsible under 80,000 miles or 8 year. I got that done about $1,600 and I will talk to Toyata about this on Monday.

I have a Rav4 2003 which is having check light engine problems and it seems to be slipping into gears for about a month or so. I'm taking it to the dealer today. Anyone have any input on 2003's?

We are having the same problems with our 2001 RAV4. We had the catalitic converter replaced after the check engine light kept coming on. Originally all the dealer did was reset the computer so the light would not come on. Twenty five miles later the light was back on. Now we find out that the computer was bad and this caused the transmission/gears to slip. Our RAV4 has 125,000 miles and is not under warranty. Had we known this several years ago, maybe we wouldn't be paying for a new transmission now. Toyota never informed us of this problem. We found this out today.

This is a complete joke. I have a 2001 Rav 4 and have had the check engine light problem since I got it (Aug. 2001). Unless Toyota recalls and fixes all of these models they should be sued (class action). They are wiling to reprogram the computer (60I ECM reprogram recall in 2007) but they do not fix the problem for good.
Anyone thinking that?
