My remote control cannot unlock the front driver side door. It's a door lock actuator problem my mecanic says. Toyota say they don't sell lock actuator separate. One must buy the entire system. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or where to to find the lock actuator?
Thanks
I wrote about the same problem earlier. Today - after reading about the Toyota Highlander driver side window mechanism failure being investigated by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA)I filed a complaint about the door actuator. You can do it online or call the hotline. Not sure what if anything will come of it, takes 4-6 weeks to receive my info in the mail and then it has to be sent back. Maybe enough people will complain.

Just had my driver side door go out on my Highlander 08. My 04 Camry had the same issue a couple of years ago twice. Toyota must cheap out on those actuators.

I've notified NHTSA about this same problem and also a problem with sun visors dropping or drooping on 2006 Highlander driver side. We need more folks to do the same.

I have a 2006 Highlander Limited that has the same driver side door actuator problem. Can't lock or unlock using the key fob or using the lock button on the door. Toyota can replace for about $500.

In addition, the driver side visor won't stay in the 'up' position. Friction fit has failed and seems to me to be a design flaw.

Guess I'm in a long line of folks who have driver side door actuator problems. Mine is on a 2006 Toyota Highlander Limited.
I looked at the website about removing the door panel but it doesn't look anything like the 2006 TH Ltd.

Does the door actuator operate the window in addition to the locking mechanism or are they separate.

What does the actuator look like??? May be looking in salvage to find one if I know what to look for.

2005 Highlander
door lock actuator, window
I had a Highlander door lock actuator quit, I couldn't find just the Actuator for a Highlander so I used a 2005 Rav4 ACTUATOR and it works perfect,$100 from advance auto vs $300 from toyota.
This is a really simple fix. Remove the panel (directions online) unplug the actuator , remove screws, replace actuator.....just be sure to get the actuator pin in the lock slot. I didn't and the window would roll down after you unlocked with the key phobe, and you can't hook up the key-lock. You need a putty knife, phillips screw driver, needle nose pliers, star head screw driver, knife.
It really is simple, but I made it very complicated ;)
Jim, your information was invaluable. I was worried about trying the Rav4 actuator but found one from Rockauto.com for $52.00 so ordered it. Received it in two days and it was a perfect match. The hardest part of doing the job was that the longer and thicker rod would not come out of the top socket. I was afraid I would break it. I pried it out with a long screw driver. The job is not difficult at all if you follow the directions on the internet on how to remove the door panel. Just do it. http://bodyshopzone.com/archives/trim/door_pa...

I have a Toyota Highlander 2005 (over 100,000 miles).

This morning, driver side would not unlock. I crawled through the passenger side.(I wasn't thinking..too early, I did not try the key :-))

I live in the cold midwest, thought my door was just frozen, but sounds like it's the actuator (probably having a harder time in the sub freezing weather).

My 2006 has same type of problem for front passenger door :0( Service quoted similar price to repair. I can hear the actuator when I use my key and when I use my key fob. It "works" but will not unlock the door. I have seen the instructions to remove the door panel... To be continued.

2008 HIghlander with all 4 doors locks not working with key fob or from inside, have to do manual lock and unlock. Went to the dealer and got the same story this is not a problem and very rarely see. I then got out the pages I printed and still got the same story, they will do nothing. My 03 Honda Pilot had 273,000 and never had a problem with the locks or windows, owned for 8 yrs till buying this pcs of junk. Gas milage is no where near what the old window sticker says. Lucky to get 18.5 on the highway with me as only one in car. Last Toyo I will ever get, back to the Honda it was great.

I just registered with toyotanation.com . This past weekend I replaced the actuator on my 2005 Highlander. The official 2005 highlander part is the ENTIRE assembly 69040-48060 for $329.55. I DID use the 2005 RAV4, which is just the actuator 69120-42080 for $128.89. A quick savings of $200.00. I have not done it yet - but I will post detailed instructions on toyotanation. There were some details that would be worth knowing. Although the job was easy - there were enough frustrating things that made it a real pain. I discovered a few tricks that I wish I had known.

I have a 2008 Highlander and replaced all 4 door actuators under 60,000 miles (2 under warranty, one covered by dealer funds, and another reimbursed by toyota after complaining to customer service online). Now the driver's side front and left rear locks work intermittently. Very frustrating. Like the vehicle but obviously flawed part.

My 2005 Toyota Highlander has the front door actuator problem as well as the rear back door handle completely fell off. Has anyone made a video of replacing the actuator.

My 2003 Highlander, front passenger door lock actuator also broke. The cheapest OEM part I found was $300. It's a minor inconvenience and annoyance. But Toyota's supplier for the door actuators need to be replaced with a higher quality part.
