Igot a 08 Highlander, re. oil change
Why is it necessary to drain the oil from the filter before removing the filter housing? Can I just remove the whole thing at once?

I've changed the oil on my wife's 2008 Highlander three times now and I can tell you that the cap-style filter wrench (65-mm size) will not work to unscrew the permanent filter housing. You will need a pair of Channel Lock pliers that is able to spread to at least 4 inches across (about 25 dollar). Yes, this is a good deal of money, but they will get the filter housing off. This car's oil filter system is needlessly complicated and messy, but once you figure it out, you will save 20 dollars per each oil change by doing it yourself. Just be sure to have an ample supply of paper towels.
Not a 65 but 64 MM with 14 facets. But the channel locks will work too if you arleady own those.

Why can't manufacturers keep it simple?

I think Toyota wants it messy for the average Joe to give up and pay the dealer to change your oil.

I bought the filter wrench and it got the cartridge housing off alright, but it was stuck on it, so I just left it and closed the trap door fine. I am now changing the oil cartridge again and the filter wrench is still there like I left it. I losen the cartridge housing a little until it starts a small stream of oil into the oil draining pan, wipe off my hand a bit. I do not use the plastic drain piece or tubing like folks discuss. The cartridge housing is really hot if you have a warm engine....best to let it cool a while before removing to change out the cartridge.
