Hey Everybody,

Does anyone know how to replace or repair the passenger arm rest (2004 Highlander 4cylinder). I put a little too much weight on it and now it just spins around and does not stay in an upright position. Do I have to replace the whole thing? A bolt or screw? Is there a bolt or screw that will support a bit more weight?

Thanks for any info,

Michael

This is a design problem. I've been working on the problem for my 01 Highlander for 3 yrs. There is a groove on the armrest that gets worn out. I've tried extending the post that extends into the groove with limited success (worked for 2 yrs, now am trying to repair it again). I drilled out a 5/32" hole and inserted a self-tapping screw which helped extend the post tip further into the arm rest groove.

My 2006 has it too. The dealer replace the whole seat back once under warranty and now, six months later the same problem is back.

My 2004 Highlander: drivers side armrest just 'died'
Has anyone come up with a reasonable repair?
I notice that Toyota sells the armrest for $117, will
simply replacing it solve the problem? Or it it likely
that the shaft into the side of the seat is damaged?
Help!
Thanks Dale

I hate the damn things anyway, there too small. I don't want to replace them I want to take them off, but I cant seem to muscle the plastic cap at the pivot point off, I would like to keep the system undamaged for resale purposes. Can anyone tell me how to get that cap off without damaging any parts. 2003 Toyota HL4cyl, cloth interior, NO ZIPPER on armrest. Thanks!

I was able to remove the cap from the arm rest by pulling straight out on it. The cap is over an inch deep so you have to pull straight out on it. With the use if a deepwell socket I removed the arm rest and possitioned it back in the correct position. There is a stud on the seat that moves back and forth in a slot on the arm rest. The stud on my seat had gotten out of the slot and in a hole on the arm rest causing it to lock in the wrong possition. The arm rest works OK now. If the stud on the arm rest was higher my problem could have been prevented.

My 2007 Highlander armrest on the drivers seat was angled down further than the passenger seat by approximately 10 degrees. I took the armrest off and put a pencil eraser in the groove to keep the armrest from traveling down so far. It worked like a champ. Now both armrests go down and stop at the same level. I don't know how long this will work but if the eraser fails in a year, then I will just throw in another eraser. Quick and easy fix.

The cloth armrest on my 2004 Highlander has frayed. Can I purchase the armrest and replace it myself. If so, where would I purchase the armrest?

I just fixed my 2001 by pulling the plastic plug straight out....which was hard. Has clips on end that make it difficult, but is possible with a wiggle as you pull. Then tighten the bolt, and it works..
