09 highlander fuel pump

I have a 09 highlander with less than 2K miles. After the car was parked and turned off for 5 hrs. in the garage, I hear the fuel pump turn on and run for about 3 minutes and then stop( the sound is coming from the gas tank area whatever it is). This happened once before a few weeks ago but I did not know what was making the sound in the garage at that time. The car runs ok. Is this normal? Any suggestions? Thanks for any help in this matter.

Doesn't sound very normal to me. I'd get that thing back to the dealer quickly. Don't let them give you the old "they all do that" routine. Get everything on record. And you keep a copy.
Of course it's possible they'll admit it's a problem and fix it right away, while giving you a loaner car and a free dinner at a nice restaurant.

We have an 04 Highlander with 95K that we have owned since new that I just started parking in a garage and I have noticed the same sound a few times lately (humming from right rear wheel well area). After a little searching I found this discussion: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread... and the Getting to now Know Your Vibe (A Toyota Matrix) PDF which talks about the "EVAP" system running about 5 hours after the car is shut off which is exactly what I'm experiencing. It must be a pump that pressurizes the evaporative emissions system to test it. I will probably ask the dealer too just to be sure but half the time I know more about their cars then they do. Like the time they wanted to charge us close to $1000.00 to repair the heater temperature control switch when all I had to do was solder a few loose wires. They claimed the never heard of the problem but it was well documented years ago on several Toyota owner forums.

If it's in warranty then get it checked. If not, then don't worry about it until it definitely fails. An 09 should still have plenty of warrant left, so have it checked just to be sure.

Highlander makes noise after being turned off.
I just bought a 2014 Toyota Highlander. I noticed a noise coming from the Highlander in the garage. It is apparently normal: The fuel evaporation leakage check occurs about 5 hours after the engine was last turned off and would last for a few minutes. This is mentioned in the owner's manual on page 8. You can also look in the index for "Noise from under the vehicle".
