Same problem. I reset the computer with one of those handheld car computer code readers (Walmart). Then had to drive it for a while, to get the computer to update all its tests with new sensor readings. There was no check engine light, so I took it in and it passed the inspection. The weather has alot to do with whether or not the "purge flow" problem trips the sensors often enough to cause the check engine light to turn on. Some sites on the web have said these canisters are defective and there should have been a recall to service them. Other problems with Toyota Corollas were defective fuel injectors, and you almost always see the left rear hub cap is missing on the 199x models.

My mom has a 2007 Toyota Camry with about 4,000 miles. We took it to Koons Toyota in Northern Virginia when the engine light appeared. The service manager indicates the carcoal canister and filter need to be replaced along with the gas cap. The estimate is $1,300. After reading posts about issues with charcoal canisters, I'm extremely disenchanted with Toyota. Also think the repair expense is highway robbery. I have messages into the service manager to obtain more details (e.g. exact error codes, etc.). Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Again, the car has less than 4 thousand miles!

Don't blame Toyota for the EVAP system issues. Blame the idiots at Federal Govt', EPA and NHTSA who make the laws and impose unreasonable emission requirements for vehicles. Saving the planet isn't cheap, somebody has to pay. That somebody is us. Toyota's emission warranty is 8yrs/80,000 miles, which ever comes first. Most people don't know this, don't put off your emissions repairs. Those of you who don't have emissions testing are lucky. In the near future it will be federal, your car's computer will be able to be scanned without hooking up to anything. You will receive citations in the mail for emissions violations.

Don't blame Toyota? How come most other manufacturers manage to make problem free evap systems?

I purchased a 2011 Corolla S new in July of 2012. Charcoal canister went out a 10,000 miles after road trip to California from Kansas. The warranty covered the repairs. Must be good that I put a lot of miles on it right away before the warranty runs out, I took it on three long cross country trips after purchase really gave it a workout.

Hey All,

Having the same problem with my 2000 corolla, and I am near 100 percent sure its because I flooded the canister with oil while trying to get as much use as possible out of a company-provided gas card. Moral of the story- never top off!

Anyway, yesterday I went to a local junkyard, found another 2000 corolla, removed the canister myself and bought it for 7 bucks. Yes, the canister location is annoying, but with some patience you can reach it with standard tools and a set of jack stands. Maybe the new-second-hand filter will have the same problem as the current one, but if so I'm only out 7 bucks and a couple hours of time (seriously, a competant novice can do this in as much time as a shop will bill uou for.) Otherwise I save hundreds of dollars. Worth a shot!

And by "flooded with oil" I meant "flooded with fuel," in case that wasn't obvious.

My 2006 Rav4 seems to evaporate gas if left sitting alot, as the gas mileage gets down to around 18 mpg, which is low for this particular car. However, when driving every day I get 24-26 mpg. I don't smell gas and no dummy lights are on (yet), but I know this thing is evaporating. Really frustrates me. No leaks observed. If it turns out to be the canister, I'll try to fix myself.

just purchased a 05 corolla....engine light is on. diagnostic evaluation showed numerous codes. dealer said it could be the charcoal cannister or the purge valve...they can't be sure until they check it out.
from reading here, its a BIG problem for toyota vehicles. my question...how do one get Toyota to help with the cost of repair and where do you report this ongoing problem to the proper gov't agency? thanks.

Did you buy from a dealer? If so, see him. If not, Toyota's not likely to offer much help on an 8 year old car. If you've got numerous codes, sometimes it's best to reset them and start from scratch.

Same old with my 2008 Yaris. They even want me to add parts at my expense to keep the canister from getting water in it again. Bill will be over $1000.00. How arrogant! Last Toyota I will buy. Unreal how they have this probably since the 90's and cannot fix.

Have a 2010 Camry Hybrid with 48K miles. Check engine light came on, charcoal canister. Dealer wanted $1050 to replace. Talked with service manager and Toyota is going to replace the canister. Had to overnight express ship it in. Great Dealer here in N. KY. Service manager went to bat for me. Ask for help. The worse they can say is no. Also, this is the fourth vehicle I have bought from this dealer. Sure they want to keep a good customer but Toyota should redesign canister and replace when needed.

I had the same problem with a 2000 Subrau Outback. I used to disconnect the hose to the canister, suck fumes out with my shop vac., reconnect the hoses and reset the check engine light. Worked every time. Usually would last for 6-8 months. Looks like there should be some way to remove the residue for the activated charcoal. We used to use activated charcoal to remove radon form radioactive waste. We would reactivate the charcoal and use it over and over again. Essentially that was what I was doing with the Outback

Don't be clicker, and try to top off your gastank. That is why many charcoal cannisters get ruined. When the pump clicks of , walk away.
