My check engine light came on and i was told that the gas cap and filler neck to the gas tank must be replaced due to corrosion and rust. I was told that this is a problem that toyota is aware of but this is not a recall problem. My repair estimate is $400. I discovered that there is a Toyota TSB #02206 that describes the problem as rust on the fuel filler neck and it seems to be happening a lot with Camrys and tundras. Anyone finding this on their Corollas? Is toyota doing anything about this?

Check engine light has been on for a couple weeks. Brought it in today, and this was our exact diagnosis -- corrosion of the gas tank filler neck. 2003 Corolla with 60K miles. Repair runs $300 in SF Bay Area.

Had the exact thing happen to me 7/09. 2004 Corolla with 20,000 miles. Cost $425 to have it fixed. Sounds like should be a recall! No more Toyotas for us!

My Mom has a 2003 Toyota Corrolla that has had the Check engine light for several weeks. The Dealer checked with diagnostics machine (smoke test) cost $106.00. They indicated to her that the fuel filler pipe and gas cap need to be replaced cost $465.00. This should be a recall and should not have to $106.00 to diagnose a defect.

Ok something needs to be done my check engine light was also on. Took my 04 Corolla S to the dealer 62,000miles on and they also said the filler neck was rusting out and repairs would run me about 475.00.

My check engine light came on about a year ago, diagnosis, small emissions leak. Came back on yesterday, same diagnosis. estimated repair $317 plus tax. I'm with everyone else here. Should be a recall.

Easy fix
1: Go to Toyota dealer parts dept, buy new gas cap. About 20 bucks.
2: Leave dealer IMMEDIATELY!
3: Go home and stick some paper towels in the filler pipe. Sandpaper the lip of the pipe until corrosion is gone. Apply thin coat of vaseline to lip. Remove paper towels.
4: Replace with new gas cap.
5: Laugh at all the nannies running around whining about the dealer wanting $900 to replace the filler pipe.

It happened to my 2003 corolla with 130K (Kms). The cost is $90 for diagnosis and $365 for replacing gas cap and the filler tube.
I think this should be taken care of by Toyota, since Toyota had prior knowledge about it.

My friend has a 2003 corolla with 101000 miles, check engine light on-code po466. We are told that the gas cap needs replacing. after reading all comments on gas caps maybe there needs to be a recall for the filler tube replacement. How do we put this in motion and make it happen. This type of problem can lead to other life threating problems.

With 101K on it, don't expect too much. Look back thru this thread for other solutions.

I bought my 2003 Corolla about 3 years ago. A few days after buying my car the check engine light came on. The dealership said that my gas filler area was rusted and needed to be fixed. They wanted to charge me but they ended up replacing it for me. I just noticed today that it has started to rust again and my check engine light is on.

I've read on this thread that a thick coating of heavy grease around the filler pipe works nicely.

Same problem, 2004 Corolla with only 55k on it. May try to repair or call dealer and see if it's covered under emmissions warranty, isn't that good for 60k-80k or so?

Absolutely! I also encounter this on my corolla. My fu el filler neck is also messed up before. What I do is to brought it back to my a toyota service center and they fix it free of charge.
