Will try calling Toyota tomorrow about this. My 2003 Camry has 43000 miles but is 4 months past 5 years. The intake manifold noise has gotten progressively worse over the last few months. Should have researched this sooner.

For those that haven't seen it, MSN.COM notes this problem in their reliability report on this model.

The latest TSB for this problem is T-SB-0034-08 which supersedes TSB No. EG018-04. I've seen a copy of the TSB which is not very useful but does contain the following info. The 2nd bullet might be the most relevant:
APPLICABLE WARRANTY
• This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty. This warranty is in effect
for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
For California specification vehicles sold, registered, and operated in California, Maine,
Massachusetts, and Vermont, this repair is covered under the California Emission Warranty,
which is 70 months or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
• The warranty department will continue to honor warranty claims under the Powertrain Warranty
for these components for 2002 – 2004 model year vehicles where it is listed as such in the
Owner’s Warranty Information booklet (refer to Warranty Policy Bulletin POL04–06).
• Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer’s specific
complaint.

I HAVE THE SAME NOISE ON MY 03 CAMRY AND IF YOU LOOK ON PAGE 22 IN THE OWNERS WARRANTY INFORMATION BOOKLET YOU WILL SEE UNDER LONG TERM EMISSION DEFECT WARRANTY. THE AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM, THEY HAVE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND INTAKE AIR SURGE TANK LISTED. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT IF YOU HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, THEN YOU HAVE A EVAPORATIVE CANISTER CLOSED VALVE THAT ALSO NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. YOU CAN SEE THIS ON AUTO.MSN. I AM GOING TO TAKE THIS UP WITH MY DEALER ALSO. I HOPE THIS HELPS SOME OF YOU OUT.
not always put seafoam through a vaccum line every oil change and have found that the pcv valve gets dirty real fast causing the check engine light to come on it is a 3 dollar part

I have a similar problem and the dealer wanted to charge me $700+ to replace the intake manifold. I called Toyota customer relation and they checked and told me this is covered under the 5 yr/60000 powertrain warranty (ONLY for a 2003 model). A notice was sent to all dealerships but most of them are not aware of it. I took the info. the Toyota customer relation gave me, went back to the dealership and told the service mgr. They called Toyota to verify and replaced the intake manifold for me free.
I have the same rattle in my 2003 Toyota Camry. The dealer wants to charge me $800 to have the intake manifold replaced and I am trying to find more info on how to have this covered under the powertrain warranty. The service advisor is telling me that this is not covered. Who should I call? Thanks.

The technical service bulletin estimates ~1.5 hr to complete this repair. Expect to pay $200-$250 for labor and $350-400 for the part.
2003 Camrys (only I think) cover this under the powertrain warranty @60 mo. or 60K miles. Over that, you're probably out of luck.

Same problem with our 2003 Camry. At about 65,000 it started make a vibration noise at idle or low acceleration. It is very annoying. We wrote letters to Toyota but they will not do anything because of the warranty. We did not get it checked until about 70,000. We are very disappointed in Toyota for this product. We have a 1996 and 2006 Toyota also. Since Toyota will not recall this car we will consider another product in our future.

New "revised" part is #172100H010. Can be bought from the internet for $304 (price included shipping). Any backyard mechanic can put this on...doesn't need to be a Toyota mechanic. Total cost for mine was $349.00. Shouldn't have had to fix it but couldn't deal with the noise which will only get louder!

SURE WISHED I HAD THE BRAINS TO FIND THIS SITE BEFORE GETTING MY INTAKE MANIFOLD REPAIRED.
THE INTAKE ON MY 2003 CAMRY (70,200 MILES) DID THE SAME THING AS HAS BEEN DESCRIBED HERE.
RAY BRANDT TOYOTA'S (NEW ORLEANS, LA) SERVICE MANAGER LIED TO ME TELLING ME IT HAD TO BE FIXED OR A PIECE OF THE MANIFOLD COULD GET SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE DESTROYING IT.
LIKE AN IDIOT, I BELIEVED HIM.
COST $975
I'VE SAVED THE OLD PART TO SHOW MY FRIENDS AND WORK ASSOCIATES JUST HOW LOW TOYOTA HAS GONE.
I WILL NEVER BUY A TOYOTA AGAIN. THEY ARE NO BETTER THAN GM OR FORD (FIX OR REPAIR DAILY) JUNK.
ONCE TOYOTA STARTED BUILDING THEIR CARS IN THE U.S., I EXPECTED A DROP IN QUALITY. THIS, OF COURSE, HAS HAPPENED AND CONTINUES TO GET WORSE.
WHY DO YOU THINK TOYOTA DROPPED THE WARRANTY PERIOD DOWN TO U.S. STANDARDS?
PLASTIC MANIFOLDS AND TIMING BELTS - DELIBERATE AND MALICIOUS RIP-OFFS. AND THEY KNOW WE'RE SO STUPID THAT WE WILL KEEP BUYING THEIR JUNK, EVEN AFTER THESE RIP-OFFS.

I owned a 2006 toyota camry 4 cyl, the other day i was getting out from school, i heard some ticking sound outside from my car while my window is down while i was only going like 10 mph ,i thought it was wheel covered but it wasn't. according to everyone here is it the intake manifold causing the ticking ? i can hear it from the driver's side i'm not an mechanic but i did popped my hood open to check and it seem the ticking is from the engine and also my engine seem idle pretty high my steering wheel on park or when i am in complete stop it shakes. i have about 51k "all highway miles" on it due to school and work. If someone can help me i would really appreciated. its my 1st new car from high school graduate present from my parents.how can i find my warranty on the camry i thought it was 3years/36000 miles ?

i had the same problem with my 03 camry i read the jan 24 post from FINK where he took the manifold out and repaired it with jb weld so i said what the heck after getting another post from FINK i took the manifold out and looke down from where the throttle body bolts to the manifold and saw the edge of the baffle he was talking about what i did was drilled a small hole in the outside layer and a small pilot hole in the baffle and used a small sheetmetal screw going thru from the outside and pulled the baffle back down that took care of the noise took pix of manifold to show where i put the screw but couldn,t post it hereif anyone wants the pix let me know can e mail it the screw is in from the outside so it can,t be sucked in to the motor

I am a high mileage driver (114K miles on a 2003 4-Cyl Camry), and Toyota refused to cover the intake manifold replacement. They were happy to mention that this car had too many miles on it for Toyota to fix it for free; but they also said that the problem was fairly widespread on this car. If they failed to properly manufacture the intake manifold, it seems that they should cover the repair regardless of the time.$650.00 later it runs like a Toyota...great!

My 2003 Camry turned 40,000 miles last week when I first noticed the "noise". Heard it inside the car when stopped at a traffic light, or when idling. When I stepped outside of my car while it was in Park, I really heard the rattling noise. Opened the hood and it was louder still. Almost like something was flapping inside the engine. Brought it to Toyota -- first they said they heard nothing, then on second inspection reported it was the "Intake Manifold" and would cost $650 to repair. Had checked this forum yesterday and knew before they told me that it may be the intake manifold, so I was able to pursue the TSB angle and did get them to admit the typo in the manual which stated 36 months, 36,000 miles should be it was 60 months/60,000 miles. Unfortunately, it was 5 years in June of 'o8 for me, so I'm out of luck. Will pursue further with Toyota Customer Service since this is obviously a problem with over 200 posts about it. Thanks to all who posted information on this problem -- it was very helpful.

well, i heard the same noise a while ago and thought nothing of it.. but yesterday when i started my car after work it sound so bad i thought it was something wrong with the cadilac converter. i opened the hood and the car sound terrible and when in idle and rev the engine it sound like a exhaust problem.. i took my car to Toyota this morning and the just called and said it was the intake manifold... and my 36 months 36000 mile warrenty will cover the charges. i will have to pay $100 deductible. i do agree that this model should have been recalled. i had no idea this was a problem. i just googled intake manifold to see what the hell it was.. and this site came up... wow! no recall, i will second guess buying another Toyota.
