Need scheduled maintenance?

My husband says I do not needed regular maintenance on my 2009 outback...he says just change oil and service only when there is a noticeable problem. What do you think? I take it to a local garage to change the oil and check everything, but this is way more expensive than taking it to a place like jiffy lube to change the oil. Should I continue to get the checks and maintenance each time I change the oil or save $ by taking it to the cheaper chain to just change the oil?
