We hadn't asked for the GPS with the rental car - we certainly hadn't paid for it, and we had our folder of Google Maps all ready - yet there it was.

Well that's a heck of an experience I hope I don't have to go through it. I would have had to toss the inconvenient GPS monster.
Carry maps and get closer even if the map is outdated.
