Just wanted to post this info for anyone in case it is helpful. I have been reviewing all this in the process of deciding whether to upgrade or drive 'til the Forester is dead.
'98 Subaru Forester S, manual, currently 147000 miles

Date - Miles - Description - Cost
Jan04 - 71485 - Purchased vehicle
Jan06 - 115284 - replaced center exhaust pipe due to corrosion -$200
Aug06 - Replaced ignition coil, spark plugs, plug wires - Approx.$300
Mar07 - Replaced clutch and both catalytic converters -$1700
Jun07 - Replaced clutch master cylinder -$200
Aug07 - Replaced clock spring (powers airbag, horn, cruise control)-$500

Forgot the mileage. Sorry. Also should mention that regular maintenance schedules have been followed strictly.
