Where is the filter element located, and how hard is it to replace?

My 2002 Subaru Outback Sport stinks - literally! When I turn on the fan, it smells like something crawled up there and died! I took the glove box off but I don't see a filter.

Just removed my 05 baja turbo to check out the air filtration filters because lately it's been smelling like A$$. Low and behold.....NO FILTERS IN THERE! Nice.....new ones on the way.
