9-3 will not shift out of park

I have a 2002 SAAB 9-3 convertible that is getting stuck in park. I have to use a screwdriver to press the emergency release beside the shifter. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Do you know how to fix it? My inspection is due by the end of the month and I don't think it will pass because of this. Thanks in advance

Try turning off the engine and pulling the key out. Wait a few seconds and go through the normal starting procedure. After a few iterations this will sometimes cure your problem although I don't know why.

same thing happened me 4 times on my 2003 saab 9-3 conv, I would wait and try again sometimes after a few key pull restarts and sometimes a day later and it would work, how do you get to the release?
