common sense wrote: How stupid can this guy be. Driving a 3000lb Porsche at 172mph is almost as dangerous as someone driving a 7500lb Hummer at 65mph. Those Brits should take this S.O.B. and teach him that if he wants to kill someone with his vehicle he should just buy a huge American made pickup or SUV and run a redlight. Instant death for someone in a car. This has got to end. People need to know that you do not need a small expensive light weight weight car to kill people. Just buy a large American made vehicle thats gets 12 mpg and you can accomplish the same thing while spending a lot less money. Do Brits not understand economy of death. What dumbarses. Wow. May I assume that you really hate tractor trailers, airplanes and trains too?

Got some bad news for you, but Norristown looks a lot like South Fla. these days.If you visit, brush up on your Espanol. However, you don't have to worry about being jumped and jacked at the Rex bar on Airy st. They tore it down. Several guys ended up leaving the rex through the pipes via the meatgrinder and garbage disposal. They are on the missing persons list.

Tired ol trooper wrote: <quoted text> Don't you just love all those folks talking about their cars doing 145-180? Some of the best I ever clocked were around 125-130. Had one at 120+ just before he hit the deer standing in the Interstate. Killed both of them! Also had several that left a LONG trail of oil and parts trying to outrun me. Yep....did have some get away. The Chrysler products we drove blew up before they did! I had the pleasure of driving Chrysler products before the switch to building cheap knockoffs of Indian cars. You are probably too young to remember back in the 50s and 60s when Chrysler built the strongest cars in America. They were also noted for being able to go around corners and able to stop unlike GM & Ford products. I used a 46 New Yorker for patrol until 1955 and never lost anyone even though it topped out at between 116 & 120. Not bad for a car Chrysler said could do 88. I did stop using it for patrol when it had about 300,000 miles on it and made the mistake of getting a 56 Chevy with the 3 2bbl carbs (same as the top 57 vette motor) Stock from the factory it topped out at 91 although the factory police speedometer registered over 110. After I replaced the modern wobble post (aptly named) valve train with the older type shaft mounted valves and had the speedometer adjusted I was able to exceed 120 on the straight but had to really brake for corners. Speaking of brakes, they were completely unreliable and you never knew which wheel was going to lock up. It did have a lot better acceleration than that old Chrysler but it should as it weighed over 1,000 pounds less and had a LOT higher rated horsepower.

Another posting without reading. 172mph absolutely is in fact "fast at all". That is why he is in jail and the whole point of the article. the 1958 corvette speedomer read to 160 mph. My current one reads to 180mph.

I must admire your honesty in correctly labeling your posting as "without reading". I will give you another chance to read my posting complete with the post that it answers. " If you had taken the time to read my post in its entirety you would have realized that we were both speculating about the police involvement. wwade was wondering how fast the patrol cruiser was to be able to catch the Porsche and I was answering that they didn't have to be fast as they could radio ahead and another have cruiser stop the Porsche. By the way, what has the speedometer in any Corvette have to do with the speed of a Porsche or of a British Police car?

reza june wrote: <quoted text> This question was addressed in post #37 I checked post #37 and there is nothing there about how the police could catch the Porsche. I did note that you have a post #34 that suggests that the police used a phone to catch the Porsche. That is quite possible but still conjecture. I am very unfamiliar with the excellent coverage available now for cell phones so I never considered phoning ahead. At the time when I would have been in a pursuit a phone call would have involve finding a pay phone and stopping to call into the station & then they would have contacted another cruiser via radio as mobile phones back then were good only in major cities.

No, there is no need for you to apologize to me as I was just letting you know that I am a dinosaur from before the cell phone era so I never considered phoning. The way there are certain radio dead spots it is very possible a trooper, especially in a 2 man cruiser, would speed dial someone that he knew was on the road ahead of him & bypass dispatch completely. Whether they do this or not I have no idea.
