I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand prix with breaklight mulfunction, the brake lights on the tail light assembly do not work, but the break light on the rear window works. I have replaced the switch under the break pad and the break bulbs, no go. Anyone know if this is a common problem.

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix , I have both brake lights out......buut the window light works. My mechanic said I need to replace the signal switch as they are connected thru the signal switch. As for now I have an elastic band around the switch and the hazzard signal. Its a time consuming job cause the airbag has to be disconnected :( so depending on where you go....it can cost a few bills:(

My 02 gtp is doing the same thing. If the hazard switch doesnt fix the problem, i am going to tie a wire from the window light to the rear and bypass the switch in the colomn. I cant see replacing the switch if the window lights come on, that means the switch is working

I have the same problem. I am on a mission to repair it, but am having difficulty finding infomration on it. I replaced the brake switch and both tail lights and the main brake lights still don't work. If you find out any thing let me know.

I have my break light not working, and so as my hazard switch (i cant even push the button).
I have checked bulbs, fuses etc. and still not. Is this somehow related, what would be the problem, is it the break light switch? |

My wife is the proud owner of a 2000 GP that was having the same tail light problem. She was even pulled over by the police and was told that she would have to pay a fine if the lights weren't working within 14 days. After reading your recommendations (day 8 by the way) I went out, pressed the hazard warning switch (which did seem to be jammed at first) in a couple times and viola, it fixed the problem. Less than 5 minutes! Thanks for your great suggestions!
My wife had one other crazy problem with her Grand Prix that had been bothering her for months. The ignition key would not disengage. At first it was once in a while and it would finally come lose. Later it wouldn't come out for anything. Just under the steering column there's a small round plastic cover plate that you can pry out. Pry that out and stick a plastic drinking straw (The Chick-fil-a straw worked great for me) straight up the hole, the lock will disengagne and the key will slide right out. I got tired of sticking straws up the hole and found a nice plastic wall anchor and pushed it up there. It stays there nicely and the keys come out every time without a problem. I hope this helps someone out there. Talk at'cha later, Eric |

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who posted this thread. I had the same problem with my brakes on a 2003 GP. I replaced the stop light switch on the brake and it did not fix the problem. I read your post and went out and hit my emergency flashers a few times and they now work again. I also had the problem with the key not disengaging and have lived with it for over a year. I had mechanics look at it and couldn't get it fixed. I stuffed a plastic anchor in the hole and now my key seems to release fine. Again thank you!!!

My wife has a '02 GP GT. She came home tonight and told me her brake lights were not working. Replaced both rear bulbs, still no brake lights. Read up on the previous entries, I noticed that the emerg.flashers would not work. Switch was stuck. I kept puting presure down on it until it started clicking. Pressed the pedal and have brake lights. But now I need to find out why flashers do not work. I guess I will check the fuses and go from there.

Pull up on the hazard signal switch. Mine was stuck down. It works now, and so do the brake lights.
