The private sector has lost 300,000 jobs in the last four months, but the government continues to add jobs. Landing a government job is like hitting the lottery. Pension plan, merit pay increases, health care, and it's virtually impossible to be fired. Increased taxes to pay for our ever expanding government is having a significant impact on consumer discretionary spending. The government needs to, at least, address the pension problem by replacing all pensions with 401k type plans. The impact of bloated government is affecting the overall economy, and the American taxpayer can no longer afford it's cost.

Probably many of the positions lost went to H1B visa holders or were outsourced to India, Pakistan, Philapines, etal. Why are we sending our kids to college? Better we send them overseas so they can become an HlB visa holder, or work for an American Corp. that takes their jobs overseas. So what if they are not "smart enough" for Bill Gates and his ilk who want to flood our country with foreign workers but would be "smart enough" to be hired at a lower pay scale. By the way, Bill Gates is very left of center, so let's not blame the GOP for being the only "pro business" greedy, anti-America "America Be Damnned" I want my profits, type.

but talk about the most miserable place to work.
it's awful.
just worked in local gov't for ten years.
not the cream of the crop, I must say....and you have 40 percent of the people employed doing 100 percent of the work. Or at least 95 of it....
I agree about most of the benefits, but not all.
it's the most miserable place to work...
I quit and won't go back.

You are so right. I spent nearly 14 years, as a contractor, at the Federal EPA. The most miserable 14 years of my life. Not only did we non-federal workers do most of the work for #13/hour, but the motley group (excluding scientists, engineers and other highly educated workers) are so overpaid and underworked you wonder why we, who know the inner workings of these state and federal agencies, do not protest by marching against $60,000/$70,000/year pencil pushers who couldn't get a job on the outside if they paid the company. Imagine, secretaries, who can barely spell, and barely parse a sentence, earning upward of $50,000/year. What madness. What a waste of our tax dollars.

As one who has been laid off since December with no return in site (construction) I say thank you Bush administration! The Economy, banking industry, and fuel prices were under your watch these past 8 years!

Congress acts like they care about Americans who have lost their jobs, but then Congress turns around and increases immigration (both legal and illegal). We don't need more low-skill workers, we don't need more H1B visas.
