Nowadays, high octane = low sales

Ernesto Evangelista prefers to pump premium gas into his 7-month-old Nissan Titan, thinking it makes the truck run better.

I purchased a 2003 GMC Envoy 5 years ago and the salesman told me the car runs on 87 Octane gasoline, and the owners manual even advises using 87 Octane. Usually manufactures recommend 90 octane or better. It seems the 4.2 liter inline 6 cylinder engine generates 275 HP but is "tuned" to run on 87 octane. The SUV runs great on regular gas. Only "high compression" engines need premium gas. Why can't other manufactures make engines that produce 275 HP and run on regular gas?

I have a car with a 10.2:1 compression ratio. In the event that I were to use regular, the engine might ping. If the ping sensor detects that the engine is pinging it will retard the timing to protect the engine. Bottom line is that you can safely use regular gas in a car that specifies premium, but you'll experience a slight reduction in performance due to the retarded timing.

HELLO AMERICA IF WE ARE NOT USING 89 OR PREMIUM GAS IS BEING BARELY USED GET RID OF THE 89 GAS ALL TOGETHER AND ONLY MAKE ENOUGH 93 THAT WILL COVER WHAT IS NEEDED AND THE REST SHOULD BE 87 THAT WAY THERE WILL BE MORE USABLE GAS ON THE MARKET AND THE PRICES MIGHT COME DOWN A BIT!!! NO MAYBE WE SHOULD JUST LEAVE ALL THE 89 AND 93 UNDER THE GROUND WHEN NOBODY IS USING IT. THIS COUNTRY HAS TURNED INTO A BIG JOKE AT THE TAX PAYER EXPENSE!!! WE NEED TO CLEAN OUR HOUSE OUT AND START OVER WITH POLITITIONS THAT ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. WE ALSO NEED TO PAY THEM ALOT LESS SO THEY COULD RELATE WITH MOST OF US AND MAYBE SOMETHING GOOD MIGHT GET DONE.

It real strange that over the years that the government has'nt pushed for autos to use an alternative fuel or drill here at home. The American public has NO choice to use an alternative becauce there is none we get SCREWED NO COMPITITION for other fuel that would run in your auto. There is compition on all other stuff you have a choice but not fuel!!!! I've been complaining since Pres. Carter betrayed the Shah of Iran back in the 70s. Iran, once one of our most reliable allies and OIL SUPPLIER in the Middle East, is what it is now because of that blundering idiot peanut farmer..
He should have become a carpenter and stuck to building houses.

Lexus IS 300 Owner here... my car runs on regular from the pump just fine. I'm not going to the race track so why in the heck would I need to pay 70+ dollars to fill my tank? High octane buys are being ridiculous and probably in some way just contributing to the problem.

Anyone that pumps high octane in their car thinking they're giving it a treat or something is an idiot. The gas is formulated for differing compression ratios, end of story.

Ride a bike. Then you won't have to worry about it.
