American automakers have to wake up and realize that people demand affordable and RELIABLE automobiles. If Ford would produce an reliable vehicle, then it wouldn't have the problem of a shrinking market share.

Ford is shrinking shifts due to it way forward plan. They are working at a profit by 2009 and this is all part of the plan. Due to a strugling economy more steps may need to be takin to stay on cousre. The Japense market is no better while Toyota,Honda, Hino, Izuzu and Mazada are all repoting major losses too. Fords are just as if not better than imports.

Toyota and Honda are gaining market share in the U.S.

I have a 2002 taurus with a 162191 miles on it and it is still rolling strong. Any car that is brought you have to take care of it by doing the maintenance....

Well, Ford and others *have* been improving reliability, see the JD Powers and Consumer Reports ratings for cars like the Fusion (and Taurus). However, perceptions are very slow to change, and for people like Gabrielle, the fact that reliability really is better these days for Ford (and other domestics) apparently isn't persuasive. Perhaps Gabrielle had a bad experience in the past, but Gabrielle probably never took a look at the reliability reports *now* on, say, the Camry V-6 (not so good) vs. the Fusion (very good) before posting the comment. These kinds of comments must be frustrating to the people who design and build reliable domestic vehicles, but I suppose it's just a natural outcome of some really bad cars that Detroit put out in the past.

Ford makes many fine cars -- all American brands made huge mistakes when they let the unions dictate the cost of a car (with benefits and pensions). The asian carmakers got their foot in the door and Chrysler, GM and Ford are all still paying the prioe trying to regain marketshare. Take a look at those cars before running back to the Asian brands. And I don't care if they are made in this country. That was just an Asian trick to cut shipping costs and make Americans feel better about buying their cars. The profit is still sent out of our country. And one last thing -- shame on you boys and girls in the UAW working at a Ford plant and driving an asian nameplate through the front gate.

Last time I checked the pistons for the Ford engines were made in Lincoln,England, powertrain in Japan and wiring harness in Taiwan. All cars assembled in the US contain up to 40% foreign made parts.

I'm sorry (actually I'm not) but telling people to "buy American" is not only condescending and stupid but blatantly anti-American. Not to mention protectionist. Duh. If you can't handle competition then go live in Cuba. Seriously.
